Bearcats Fall to Host California Lutheran, 3-0

THOUSAND OAKS, CALIF. -- The host California Lutheran University Regals, ranked #22 in this week's NCAA Division III National Poll, defeated Willamette University, 3-0, in the opening match of the CLU Tournament on Friday, Sept. 12. Summer Plante-Newman led the Regals with 10 kills,while Jessica Durham (Sr., OH, Medford, OR/NorthMedford HS) topped Willamette with seven kills and 12 digs.

CLU won the match, 25-19, 25-10, 25-17 to improve to 4-3 on the season. Willamette fell to 2-5.

In addition to Durham'/s seven kills, the Bearcats received five kills from Anika Moffett (Fr., OH, Portland, OR/Lincoln HS). Clare Chedester (Sr., LIB/Encinitas, CA/San Dieguito Academy) provided WU with 20 assists. The Bearcats had just one service ace and eight serving errors.

California Lutheran hit .329 as a team. Following Plante-Newman and her 10 kills on the CLU offensive chart was Allison Kerr, who earned eight kills. Megan Thorpe contributed seven kills. Lindsey Benson supplied the Regals with 24 assists and 10 digs. CLU recorded 9.5 team total blocks.

Willamette was slated to conclude the first day of the tournament with a match against the University of Redlands. On Saturday, WU will play Pomona-Pitzer at 9 a.m.(PDT) and will take on Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 2 p.m. (PDT).
