Lewis & Clark Wins NWC Match with Bearcats, 3-0
SALEM, ORE. -- Lewis & Clark College committed eight fewer attacking errors than Willamette University in their Northwest Conference volleyball match at Cone Field House on Tuesday, Sept. 30. The Pioneers turned that advantage into eight more points than Willamette, as L&C won the match in three sets, 25-22, 25-22, 27-25.
Lewis & Clark improved to 8-8 overall, 3-2 in the Northwest Conference. Willamette fell to 3-12 overall, including 1-4 in the NWC.
Many of the match statistics were very close. Willamette earned 36 kills and Lewis & Clark had 35. The Pioneers achieved 33 assists and WU registered 32. L&C had one more ace than serving errors (4-3) and Willamette finished with two more aces (9) than errors (7). Lewis & Clark achieved 9.0 team total blocks, compared to 7.5 team total blocks for the Bearcats.
The Pioneers gained an edge in hitting accuracy. L&C made just 17 errors on 115 total attacks during the three sets, while Willamette finished with 25 errors on 129 attacks. The Pioneers hit .157 as a team and WU ended the night with a .085 hitting percentage.
For the Bearcats, Jessica McGraw (Jr., OH, Gaston, OR/Corban College) provided 10 kills, 17 digs, three aces and three block assists. She led all players on both teams in digs and tied for the match high in kills. Katherine Fiedler of L&C also registered 10 kills. Sarah Hall of L&C earned 10 digs.
Following McGraw on WU's kill chart were Jessica Durham (Sr., OH, Medford, OR/North Medford HS) and Kelley Lindstrom (Sr., OH, Banks, OR/Banks HS). Durham registered eight kills and Lindstrom finished with six.
Christine Dion (Sr., S, San Jose, CA/University of Portland) contributed 18 assists for the Bearcats. Clare Chedester (Sr., LIB/S, Encinitas, CA/San Dieguito Academy) achieved 13 assists and produced 13 digs.
Kelsey Clark of L&C added eight kills and five total blocks for the Pioneers. Andrea Chase recorded 19 assists and Lou Ohki, the libero for L&C, supplied nine digs.
Willamette surged out to a 7-4 lead in the first set, but couldn't sustain the momentum. L&C stayed close, then used a 5-0 run to take a 14-11 advantage. The Pioneers held the lead during the remainder of the set, but WU cut the margin to two points several times, including 24-22. A service error by the Bearcats gave L&C the final point of the set.
The 'Cats were ahead 6-2 in the second set, but the Pioneers won the next three rallies to get within a single point. L&C took the lead for good at 14-13 on a kill by Margaret Dowling. Later, L&C owned a 22-18 advantage before the Bearcats went on a 4-2 run that cut the lead to 24-22 following a kill by Durham. The set ended with an attacking error by Willamette.
WU held a 16-12 advantage in the third set after a kill by McGraw. A 7-2 run by the Pioneers gave L&C a one-point lead and the set was close the rest of the way.
Eventually, Lewis & Clark reached match point at 24-23, but McGraw and Christina McGilvray (So., MB, Cove, OR/Cove HS) registered back-to-back kills to give WU the lead. L&C put together three consecutive kills, two by Clark and one from Margaret Dowling, to win the set and complete the match.
The Bearcats will play at Cone Field House again on Friday, Oct. 3, when they host Pacific University in NWC action. Match time is scheduled for 7 p.m. (PDT).
