Ueno Wins NWC Five-Way at Illahe Hills
SALEM, ORE. -- Whitney Ueno (Sr., Hilo, HI/Hilo HS) of Willamette University shot a 78 to win medalist honors at the Northwest Conference Five-Way hosted by the Bearcats on Monday, Sept. 15 at the Illahe Hills Country Club. Ueno won by two strokes over Mandy Cameron of George Fox University and Valerie Kitamori of Pacific University.
Following Ueno, Cameron and Kitamori was Brynn Hurdus of Linfield, who took fourth place with an 81. Fifth place went to Brittany Johnston of Linfield with an 86.
In the team competition, George Fox shot 353 to win by one stroke over Linfield College, which finished at 354. Pacific was third with a 362, and was followed by Willamette in fourth at 432 and Lewis & Clark College in fifth at 433.
Ueno shot a 38 on the front nine and finished with a 40 over the final nine holes. She was followed on WU's scoring chart by freshman Alex Johnson (Salem, OR/Blanchet Catholic School), who shot a 90, including 42 on the back nine. Andrea Hand (Sr., Hillsboro, OR/Hillsboro HS) registered a 117 for the day.
The Five-Way tournament matched up the five NWC teams located in Oregon. It was Willamette's first competition of the season.
WU's next trip to the links is set for Saturday, Sept. 20 and Sunday, Sept. 21 at the Pacific Five-Way in Bend, Ore. Both rounds will be held at the Quail Valley Country Club, starting at 1:30 p.m. (PDT) on Saturday and at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
