Bearcats Down Bruins in Dual Match, 15-3
SALEM, ORE. -- Willamette University defeated George Fox University, 15-3, in men's golf action on Wednesday, Oct. 8 at the Illahe Hills Country Club. The teams used several scoring formats with six points up for grabs in each of two matches involving two-man teams and three points available in two singles matches.
In Match #1, Willamette's team of Ben Bryant (Sr., Albany, OR/West Albany HS) and Taylor McKenzie (Fr., Hermiston, OR/Hermiston HS) defeated Dustin Churchill and Aaron Burkhart of GFU, 6-0. In Match #2, Shane Adversalo (Jr., Honolulu, HI/University Laboratory School) and Robbie Beard (Jr., Yankton, SD/Yankton HS) of Willamette downed GFU's team of Matt Fanning and Mike Ulstad, 6-0.
Ian Osborne (So., Carmel, CA/Carmel HS) of WU competed in both Match #3 and Match #4, as he took on Kelton Johnson and Ryan Stokke, respectively. Johnson defeated Osborne in Match #3, 2-1. In Match #4, Osborne edged out Stokke, 2-1.
The Champman System Better Ball format was used in match play on the front nine of Match #1 and Match #2 (2 points available). The back nine involved the Alternate Shot format for another two points. The overall 18-hole standings determined the final two points. In Match #3 and Match #4, the golfers used match play only, with one point awarded on the front nine, one point on the back nine and one point for the entire 18 holes.
Willamette is scheduled to play a dual match on Thursday (Oct. 9) at the Quail Valley Country Club against Pacific University. Tee time is set for 1 p.m. (PDT).
