Cross Country Competes at the Beaver Classic
CORVALLIS, ORE. -- The Willamette University cross country teams entered a select group of runners in the Beaver Classic at Avery Park in Corvallis, Ore. WU's men were led by Chris Platano (Jr., Myrtle Point, OR/Myrtle Point HS), who was 18th in a field of 149. The Bearcat women, led by Sarah McSweeney (Fr., Petaluma, CA/Casa Grande HS), finished in seventh place. The event was hosted by the Corvallis Running Project.
Platano completed the 8-kilometer course in 25:37. Nathan Smith (So., Colorado Springs, CO/Air Academy HS) of Willamette was 32nd with a time of 25:55.
Unattached runner Carlos Trujillo won the men's race in 23:49. Esteban Trujillo, also running unattached, finished second in 24:10.
McSweeney placed 46th overall (25th among scorers) in the women's race after crossing the finish line in 23:29 for the 6-kilometer course. McSweeney edged out teammate Phoebe Tolllefson (Fr., Billings, MT/Billings HS), who also recorded a time of 23:29 and took 47th. Elizabeth Spartas (Fr., Bozeman, MT/Bozeman HS) was 51st and concluded the race in 23:35.
The individual women's champion was Katie Hansen of Seattle University, who clocked in at 21:10. Penny McDermott of the Corvallis Running Project was second with a time of 21:28. Michelle Kvernmo with the Bowerman Athletic Club was third in 21:51.
Bowerman AC claimed the women's team championship with a score of 27. The men's team champion was Southern Oregon University with a score of 26. WU placed sixth in the men's competition.
Willamette's Northwest Conference runners did not compete on Saturday, but will return to action at the NWC Championships at Ft. Walla Walla Park on Saturday, Nov. 1. Willamette has won seven consecutive NWC men's team tiles and six consecutive NWC women's team titles.
