Linfield Makes Few Mistakes in 3-0 Win over Willamette

SALEM, ORE. -- Linfield College committed a total of only six attacking errors in three sets, as the Wildcats defeated Willamette University, 25-16, 25-21, 25-14, at Cone Field House on Saturday, Oct. 25. Linfield upped its overall record to 10-6, while improving to 6-6 in the Northwest Conference. Willamette dropped to 6-16 overall, 4-8 in the NWC.

The offensive execution, plus 60 digs on defense, allowed the Wildcats to sweep the match. Linfield hit .321 overall, with 41 kills, six errors and 109 total attacks. Willamette nearly matched the Wildcats in kills, as the Bearcats finished with 38. WU was unable to match Linfiled's accuracy, as the Bearcats had 22 attacking errors and hit .121 for the match.

Samantha Lau of Linfield led all players with 12 kills, while Emily Vuylsteke provided 10 kills for the Wildcats. Willamette was led by Jessica McGraw (Jr., OH, Gaston, OR/Corban College) with 11 kills and 18 digs. Jessica Durham (Sr., OH, Medford, OR/North Medford HS) contributed 10 kills and nine digs for WU.

Willamette trailed 8-4 in the first set, but went on a 4-1 run to get within 9-8 on a kill by Christina McGilvray (So., MB, Cove, OR/Cove HS). Linfield countered with a 6-1 surge as the Wildcats took a 15-9 advantage. The Wildcats gradually increased the lead an won the set, 25-16.

The Bearcats stayed close to the Wildcats throughout the second set. Willamette also held several leads in set #2, including 17-15 on a kill by Durham. Linfield won the next four rallies for a 19-17 edge and maintained the lead on its way to a 25-21 victory. Emily Vuylsteke provided the winning point.

In the third set, Linfield took an 8-3 lead. The Bearcats pulled within 11-9, before the Wildcats scored three straight points to start a 7-2 run. The run created an 18-11 lead for Linfield, which eventually won the set, 25-14.

Clare Chedester (Sr., S/LIB, Encinitas, CA/San Dieguito HS) attained 34 assists for Willamette. Stephanie Purser concluded the match with 30 assists for Linfield. Rachel Rahn, who played libero for the Wildcats, earned 14 digs.

Willamette will return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 28 with a match at Lewis & Clark College. The match is slated to get underway at 7 p.m. (PDT).
