Murakami Leads Willamette on Second Day of Northwest Regional
WALLA WALLA, WASH. -- Willamette University's Andrew Murakami (Sr., Wahiawa, HI/University of Redlands) won two matches on Saturday, Oct. 4 to reach the Round of 16 at the Wilson/ITA Small College Northwest Regional Men's Tennis Championship, hosted by Whitman College. Murakami, seeded #11, will take on Kyle Anderson of Linfield College, seeded #7, in the Round of 16 on Sunday at 9 a.m. (PDT).
Murakami opened singles play with a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Scott Sheldon of Pacific Lutheran University. In the second round, Murakami moved past Thomas Roston of Whitman College, 6-3, 6-1.
Whitman advanced eight players into the Round of 16, while Linfield had four player work their way through the first two rounds. Murakami was the only Bearcat to pick up two wins on Saturday.
Matt Houser (So., Vancouver, WA/Evergreen HS) of Willamette fell to #6-seeded Michael Manser of Pacific Lutheran in the first round. Manser won 6-3, 6-0.
Michael Moore (So., Seattle, WA/Lakeside School) of WU defeated Patrick Kinghorn of Pacific University in the first round, 6-2, 6-2, but lost to the #8 seed, Dan Wilson of Whitman, 6-2, 6-2, in the second round. Shawn Mahmood (So., Gresham, OR/La Salle HS) of Willamette fell to #12-seeded Mark Magdaong of Linfield, 6-1, 6-1, in the first round.
Due to the weather, all of Saturday's action took place inside the Bratton Tennis Center. As a result, consolation matches in singles and doubles were not played.
Sunday's schedule will include two rounds in singles and two rounds in doubles, as the tournament reaches the semifinals in both brackets. Houser and Murakami will compete in the Round of 16 in doubles against Joe Wales and Colin Zalewski of Whitworth University. The winners will move into the quarterfinals. Semifinals and finals are set to be played on Monday.
