Ueno Wins Medalist Honors at NWC Fall Classic
REDMOND, WASH. -- Whitney Ueno (Sr.,Hilo, HI/Hilo HS) of Willamette University won the individual title at the Northwest Conference Women's Fall Classic, as action concluded at the Juniper Golf Club on Sunday, Oct. 19. Ueno registered a two-round score of 156 to win the event by nine strokes. Whitworth University claimed the team title.
Ueno shot an 82 (42-40) on Sunday to go with her 74 in the first round. She had the second-best round of the day on Sunday, after earning the low round of the tournament on Saturday. Ueno has won for tied for first place in all eight tournaments the Bearcats have attended in calendar year 2008.
After studying abroad in the fall of 2007, Ueno finished first three times and tied for first once this past spring. During the fall, she has claimed outright titles at three tournaments and has tied for first once. By winning the NWC Fall Classic, she has clinched All-Northwest Conference honors for the fourth consecutive year.
Ueno was followed on the leader board by Valerie Kitamori of Pacific University, who recorded the low round on Sunday (80) and took second overall with a score of 165. Liz Martin of Whitworth placed third at 169 (84-85), Brynn Hurdus of Linfield College was fourth with a 170 (82-88) and Sarah McCown of George Fox University was fifth at 171 (82-89).
Whitworth's winning score for the team title was 698. Pacific finished second at 712, while George Fox was one stroke back in third place at 713. The University of Puget Sound took fourth at 721, Linfield was fifth with a score of 730, Pacific Lutheran University was sixth at 813 and Willamette took seventh at 840.
Alex Johnson (Fr., Salem, OR/Blanchet Catholic School) concluded the weekend second on WU's overall scorecard for the tournament. She shot a 94 in the first round and a 95 in the second round to finish with a 36-hole score of 189. Andrea Hand (Sr., Hillsboro, OR/Hillsboro HS) and Tanya Schiller (Jr., South Bend, WA/South Bend HS) also competed for the Bearcats.
The Fall Classic makes up one-fourth of the overall NWC title. The Spring Classic represents another fourth of the title, with the NWC Championship meet providing the final half.
