Willamette in Fifth after First Day of NWC Fall Classic in Men's Golf
KENNEWICK, WASH. -- Willamette University completed the first day of the Northwest Conference Fall Classic in fifth place on Saturday, Oct. 18, in action at the Canyon Lakes Golf Course. WU's top golfer on the first day was Shane Adversalo (Jr., Honolulu, HI/University Laboratory School), who shot a 77 and was tied for 16th.
Pacific Unversity led the team standings by a single stroke with a score of 294. Linfield College was second at 295. Whitworth University held third place at 307 and the University of Puget Sound was fourth at 308. Willamette followed in fifth at 317, with Pacific Lutheran University in sixth at 318, Whitman College in seventh at 329 and George Fox University in eighth at 331. Lewis & Clark College did not compete.
The medalist race featured Ben Wright of Pacific at the top with a 3-under-par 69 (36-33). Brian Barton of Whitman was second with a 2-under 70 (36-34). Tyler Nelson of Linfield held third place with a 72 (36-36), while Jeff Aly of Whitworth was fourth with a 73 (38-35). Fifth place involved a three-way tie between Yutaro Sakamoto (39-35--74) and Joel Rychard (38-36--74), both from Linfield, and J.T. Compher (37-37--74) from Pacific.
Adversalo's 77 was one of three Willamette scores in the 70s. Taylor McKenzie (Fr., Hermiston, OR/Hermiston HS) shot a 78 (39-39) to tie fro 17th place. Robbie Beard (Jr., Yankton, SD/Yankton HS) carded a 79 (40-39) and tied for 21st place. Also contributing to WU's team score was Kevin Burfeind (So., Kalispell, MT/Flathead HS), who shot an 83 (39-44).
WU's six-man lineup was completed by Ben Bryant (Sr., Albany, OR/West Albany HS) and Tyler Robinson (Sr., Salem, OR/Umpqua Valley Christian School). Bryant shot an 84 (44-40) and Burfiend shot an 86 (46-40).
Action in the NWC Fall Classic will conclude on Sunday, Oct. 19 with the final 18 holes. Tee times are set to begin at 8 a.m. (PDT).
The Fall Classic makes up one-fourth of the overall NWC title. The Spring Classic represents another fourth of the title, with the NWC Championship meet providing the final half.
