Bearcats Finish Seventh at NWC Swimming Relays

PORTLAND, ORE. -- Willamette University finished in seventh place at the Northwest Conference Swimming Relays on Saturday, Nov. 1 at Lewis & Clark College. The NWC Relays included men's, women's and combined events. The overall champion was the University of Puget Sound. All events were held at the Zehntbauer Swim Pavilion.

UPS scored 544 wins to achieve a 64-point margin of victory. Pacific Lutheran was second at 480 and Whitman College placed third at 456. Linfield College took fourth place with 442 points, Pacific University was fifth at 412, Lewis & Clark took sixth at 372 and Willamette was seventh at 328.

Willamette's top finishes were earned by the 300-yard individual medley relay teams. The women's individual medley relay team from WU took third place in 3:26.93. Hanna Connett (So., Pullman, WA/Pullman HS), Janelle Higashida (Fr., Keneohe, HI/Hawaii Baptist Academy) and Kara Koetje (Fr., Arlington, WA/Stanwood HS) swam for the Bearcats. Lewis & Clark won the race in 3:17.33.

The Willamette men's individual medley relay squad of James Huang (Sr., Portland, OR/Sunset HS), Kevin Tangeman (Jr., Sherwood, OR/Sherwood HS) and Matt Tanigawa (Jr., Kailuah, HI/Hawaii Baptist Academy) achieved third place in 3:07.01. UPS took first place with a time of 2:49.63.

Willamette also placed fifth in a total of five races. The women's team took fifth in the 300-yard butterfly relay, the 600-yard freestyle relay and the 900-yard freestyle relay. The Bearcat men's team finished fifth in the 300-yard butterfly relay and the 300-yard breaststroke relay.

Koetje, Higashida and Connett swam for WU in the women's 300-yard butterfly relay and recorded a time of 3:25.92. In the women's 600 free relay, Jenna Larrow (Jr., Boise, ID/Timberline HS), Hannah Buchner (Fr., Lawrence, KS/Lawrence HS) and Whitney Pryce (Jr., Glastonbury, CT/Glastonbury HS) combined their efforts for a time of 6:45.60.

WU's team in the women's 900 free relay was Buchner, Larrow and Pryce. They completed the race in 10:41.31.

Swimming for the Bearcats in the men's 300-yard butterfly relay were Tangeman, John Schmidtbauer (So., Whittier, CA/Whittier HS) and Huang. The WU trio finished the event in 3:02.59. Huang, Tangeman and Michael McGeehan (Fr., Moscow ID/Moscow HS) swam for the 'Cats in the 300-yard breaststroke relay. They clocked in with a time of 3:28.67.

Willamette will return to Lewis & Clark for the Bearcats' first dual meet of the season on Friday, Nov. 7. The action is scheduled to get underway at 6 p.m. (PST). The home opener for the 'Cats is on Saturday, Nov. 8 against the University of Puget Sound at 1 p.m. (PST) at the WU Natatorium.
