College of Idaho Defeats Willamette, 91-59, at Golden Rule Shootout

CALDWELL, IDAHO -- The College of Idaho defeated Willamette University, 91-59, in the first round of the Duane Wolfe Memorial Golden Rule Shootout on Friday, Nov. 21 in Caldwell, Idaho. The Coyotes were playing their fifth game of the regular season, while the contest was the season-opener for the Bearcats. College of Idaho improved to 1-4 overall, while Willamette started the season at 0-1.

The Yotes, who compete in NAIA Division II, entered their home tournament after playing four NAIA Division I opponents. Willamette competes in NCAA Division III.

WU was led by junior post Cameron Mitchell (Portland, OR/Grant HS/University of Redlands), who scored 23 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. Mitchell hit 8 of 16 field goals and made 7 of 10 free throw attempts. Kyler McClary (Sr., Post, Hillsboro, OR/Glencoe HS) provided the Bearcats with 12 points and grabbed six rebounds. Nick Babij (Sr., Wing, Ontario, OR/Ontario HS) chipped in eight points and five rebounds.

Craig McGee paced the Yotes with 25 points. He also earned 11 rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocked shots. McGee was 11 of 15 from the floor and 3 for 4 at the line. Brian Bergerson added 13 points to lead four other C of I players with double digits in scoring.

Poor first-half shooting hurt the Bearcats. WU connected on just 21.6% of its shots during the first 20 minutes (8 of 37). The Yotes shot 41.7% from the field in the first half (15 of 36) on their way to a 44-26 halftime lead.

The College of Idaho owned a slim 14-12 lead at the 14:31 mark and was in front by just five points, 28-23, after Mitchell made a layup for WU with 6:35 to go in the half. The Yotes closed the period with a 16-3 run.

For the game, C of I was 32 of 69 from the field (46.4%), including 9 of 22 from 3-point range (40.9%). The Yotes were successful on 18 of 24 free throws.

Willamette shot 30.3% overall (20 of 66) and hit 4 of 13 three-point attempts. The 'Cats converted just 53.6% at the line, sinking 15 of 18 free throw attempts.

The Bearcats will play Eastern Oregon University in the second round of the Golden Rule Shootout on Saturday, Nov. 22. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. (MST)/5 p.m. (PST).
