Linfield Men and Women Defeat Bearcats
McMINNVILLE, ORE. -- The Linfield College swimming teams defeated Willamette University on Saturday, Jan. 24 in a Northwest Conference meet at the Linfield Aquatics Center. Linfield's men downed the Bearcats, 108-60, and the Wildcat women's team outlasted Willamette, 107-81. The meet was held using the short format.
Willamette's women won four individual events, including a pair of victories by Jenna Larrow (Jr., Boise, ID/Timberline HS). Larrow took first place in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:52.92 and was first in the 1,000-yard freestyle in 11:47.13. She went 4 for 4 in individual events during the weekend, including triumphs in the 1,650 free and the 500 free against the College of Idaho on Friday.
Also winning for Willamette against Linfield's women were Hanna Connett (So., Pullman, WA/Pullman HS) and Gwen Schulze (Jr., Silverdale, WA/Central Kitsap HS/Austin College). Connett prevailed in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:07.69, as she finished 1.89 seconds in front of Linfield's Melany Krill (2:09.58). Schulze won the 100-yard butterfly in 1:02.55.
Rose Hollingsworth of Linfield won two events for the Wildcats. She took first in the 400-yard individual medley (4:56.22) and placed first in the 100-yard freestyle at 56.93 seconds.
Three Bearcats each recorded a victory in the men's competition. John Schmidtbauer (So., Whittier, CA/Whittier HS) won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:52.78, as he held off a challenge from Linfield's Conor Moynihan, who finished in 1:53.18.
Michael McGeehan (Fr., Moscow, ID/Moscow HS) led a 1-2 finish for WU in the 100-yard freestyle, as he clocked in at 52.12 seconds. Kevin Tangeman (Jr., Sherwood, OR/Sherwood HS) took second in 53.34 seconds. James Huang (Sr., Portland, OR/Sunset HS) swam unopposed in the 500-yard freestyle and recorded a time of 5:45.47.
Tyler Huynh won two events for the Linfield men's team. His time in the 400-yard individual medley was 4:42.78. He also took first place in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:06.82, for a 0.09-second margin over McGeehan, who took second in 1:06.91. Overall, the Wildcats won six events and both relays.
Willamette's next competition is set for Friday, Jan. 30 against Pacific University at the WU Natatorium. The NWC action will get underway at 6 p.m. (PST).
