Schulze Advances to Finals in 200-Yard Butterfly at NWC Meet
FEDERAL WAY, WASH. -- Gwen Schulze (Jr., Silverdale, WA/Central Kitsap HS/Austin College) of Willamette University has advanced to the finals in the 200-yard butterfly at the Northwest Conference Championships, being held this weekend at the King County Aquatic Center. In the morning session on Sunday, Feb. 15, she recorded a time of 2:20.81 in the event, as she finished eighth in the preliminary heats.
Schulze will swim in the championship heat of the 200 butterfly later on Sunday. She will be competing in the finals for the second time this weekend. On Saturday, she took sixth place in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:01.96.
Four other Bearcats will be swimming in the consolation finals when the meet's final session gets underway this evening. Michael McGeehan (Fr., Moscow, ID/Moscow HS) and John Schmidtbauer (So., Whittier, CA/Whittier HS) will compete in the 100-yard freestyle. McGeehan was 13th in the prelims with a time of 50.33 seconds and Schmidtbauer was 14th in 50.42 seconds.
Hanna Connett (So., Pullman, WA/Pullman HS) was 12th in the preliminary heats of the 200-yard breaststroke, as she finished in 2:42.89. She took more than 11 seconds off her seed time of 2:54.34. Kevin Tangeman (Jr., Sherwood, OR/Sherwood HS) also reached the consolation finals by placing 15th in the prelims of the 200-yard butterfly. His time was 2:21.59.
Tangeman also is scheduled to compete in the only round of the 1,650-yard freestyle. Jenna Larrow (Jr., Boise, ID/Timberline HS) will swim in the women's 1,650-yard freestyle.
