Linfield Wins Team Title by 29 Strokes at Willamette Invitational

SALEM, ORE. -- Linfield College won the team title by by 29 strokes and Max Bonk of Pacific University won the individual championship by one stroke at the 36-hole Willamette Invitational at Creekside Golf Club on Monday, March 16. Linfield registered an overall score of 599, with a 307 in the first round and a four-over-par 292 in the second round. Bonk carded a 146 (74-72) to achieve medalist honors by the narrowest of margins over Yutaro Sakamoto from Linfield, who shot a 147 (75-72).

Linfield was followed by a tie for second place in the team standings between Corban College (316-312--628) and Pacific (321-307--628). Walla Walla Community College took fourth place at 633 (314-319) and Willamette was fifth, just one stroke back at 634 (316-318). The University of Puget Sound was sixth with a score of 678 and Central Oregon Community college was seventh at 705.

Bonk edge out Linfield teammates Sakamoto and Kevin Duerr to claim the individual title. Duerr, whose first-round 73 led by one stroke over Bonk, finished in third place with a 147 (73-76). Ben Bryant (Sr., Albany, OR/West Albany HS) of Willamette placed fourth at 150 after carding consecutive rounds of 75. Fifth place went to Alex Fitch of Linfield, who shot 80-72--152.

Fitch's 72 in the second round matched Bonk, Sakamoto and Joel Rychard of Linfield for the low round of the day. Rychard, who shot 81-72--153, and Mike Noreen from Walla Walla CC, who recorded 77-76-153, tied for sixth place.

Following Bryant on Willamette's team scorecard was Robbie Beard (Jr., Yankton, SD/Yankton HS) in a five-way tie for 12th place at 161. Beard shot an 80 in the first round and an 81 in the second round.

Other WU golfers who contributed scores to the Bearcats' team total were Tyler Robinson (Salem, OR/Umpqua Valley Christian School) with a 165 (86-79) and Kevin Burfeind (So., Kalispell, MT/Flathead HS) with a 168 (85-83). Shane Adversalo (Jr., Honolulu, HI/University Laboratory School) of Willamette had to withdraw after shooting a 76 in the first round.
