Mattox Earns Provisional Mark in 1,500 at Oregon Preview
EUGENE, ORE. -- Kimber Mattox (Fr., Bend, OR/Bend HS/Cornell Univ.) of Willamette University completed the 1,500-meter run in 4:38.67 at the Oregon Preview to register a provisional qualifying time for the NCAA Division III National Championships later this spring. The Oregon Preview was hosted at Hayward Field by the University of Oregon on Saturday, March 21.
Mattox has now achieved a provisional qualifying time in two events. She gained her first provisional time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at 10:49.67 during Willamette's dual meet with Western Oregon on March 14.
Her time in the 1,500 puts Mattox in 10th on Willamette's list of all-time top performances. Zoe Buckman won Saturday's race with a time of 4:21.68. Mattox finished in eighth place. Jena Winger (Sr., Bonney Lake, WA/Sumner HS) of Willamette took 12th at 4:46.73.
Willamette placed three runners in the top six in the men's 800-meter run, led by Reid Gilbertson (Fr., Lake Elmo, MN/Stillwater HS) in second place at 1:54.65. Paul Winger (Fr., Bonney Lake, WA/Bonney Lake HS) was third after recording a time of 1:55.08. Ryan McLaughlin (So., Milwaukie, OR/Milwaukie HS) placed sixth in 1:57.03.
Emmanuel Bofa of Whitworth University, the defending NCAA Division III champion, won the 800. His time was 1:51.74.
WU also earned a pair of top six finishes in the women's high jump. Andrea Richardson (Fr., Beaverton, OR/Aloha HS) took second place by clearing 5'1.75". She was one of four competitors to safely jump at 5'1.75", but took second place outright on fewer jumps. Brooke Smith (Sr., Idleyld Park, OR/Glide HS) of Willamette was sixth at 4'11.75". Jasmine Kelly from U of O won the event at 5'5.75".
In the men's 1,500-meter run, Kyle Kotaich (Jr., Florence, OR/Siuslaw HS) from WU took 10th place. He recorded a time of 3:58.21.
Willamette's Stefan Redfield (So., Sisters, OR/Sisters HS) was third in the men's 1,500 "B" race at 4:01.42, while Nick Rebol (So., Cottonwood, CA/Red Bluff Union HS) was fifth at 4:01.91. Redfield's time was a personal best.
