Mattox Chosen NWC Student-Athlete of the Week for Second Time this Spring
SALEM, ORE. -- Kimber Mattox (Fr., Bend, OR/Bend HS/Cornell Univ.) from Willamette University has been selected as the Northwest Conference Women's Track Student-Athlete of the Week after competing at the Oregon Preview on Saturday, March 21. During the meet, held at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., Mattox recorded a provisional qualifying time for the NCAA Division III Championships in the 1,500-meter run.
Mattox took eighth place in the event with a time of 4:38.67. Her time beat the NCAA provisional standard of 4:39.00. The freshman runner also moved into 10th on Willamette's all-time list in the 1,500.
It was the second time this season that Mattox earned a provisional qualifying time for the NCAA Championships. She achieved a provisional time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at 10:49.67 in Willamette's dual meet with Western Oregon University on Saturday, March 14. Her time in the steeplechase put her third on WU's top 10 list.
Mattox also was the NWC Women's Track Student-Athlete of the Week on March 3, after earning a time of 11:08.33 in her first collegiate race to win the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Willamette Opener (Feb. 28).
Willamette will return to the track when the Bearcats host the Willamette Invitational on Friday, April 3 and Saturday, April 4 at the Charles Bowles Track. Each year, the Willamette Invite is one of the largest collegiate meets on the West Coast. Events are set to get underway at 3 p.m. on Friday and at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
