SALEM, ORE. -- Willamette University track and field athlete Kimber Mattox (Fr., Bend, OR/Bend HS/Cornell Univ.) has been named Northwest Conference Women's Track Student-Athlete of the Week for the week ending March 1, 2009. Mattox won the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Willamette Opener on Saturday, Feb. 28.

Mattox completed the race in 11:08.33 to lead a 1-2 finish by the Bearcats. Jena Winger (Sr., Bonney Lake, WA/Sumner HS) took second place in 11:15.46. The winning time puts Mattox in third place on Willamette's all-time list in the steeplechase. Winger holds the school record at 10:46.74 (2008) and Kari Holbert ranks second at 10:59.44 (2004).

The time for Mattox also was under the NCAA Provisional qualifying standard of 11:13.0, but does not count for national qualification because it occurred prior to March 1. Even so, it was a tremendous first collegiate race for Mattox.

Willamette's next track and field competition is set for Saturday, March 7 at Western Oregon University. Starting time for the dual meet in Monmouth, Ore., is scheduled for 11 a.m. (PST).

Kimber Mattox took first place in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:08.33 at the Willamette Opener.
