Ueno is in Second Place, One Shot Behind the Leader, after First Round of NWC Spring Classic

TACOMA, WASH. -- Whitney Ueno (Sr., Hilo, HI/Hilo HS) was in second place with a score 84 after the first day of the Northwest Conference Women's Spring Classic on Monday, March 30 at the Chambers Bay Golf Course. Brynn Hurdus of Linfield College topped the individual standings with an 83. Valerie Kitamori of Pacific University was third at 86.

Whitworth University was first in the team standings at 361. George Fox University was one stroke back in second at 362. Linfield and the University of Puget Sound shared third place, just two strokes off the pace at 363. Fifth place was earned by Pacific at 372. Willamette was sixth at 439 and Whitman College was seventh at 444. Lewis & Clark College and Pacific Lutheran University did not enter full teams.

Hurdus shot 42 on the front nine and 41 over the final nine holes. Ueno carded a 45 over the front nine, then finished with a 39 for the back nine to move within one stroke of Hurdus. Her score on the back nine was the lowest nine-hole score of the day. Kitamura registered 44 on the front nine and 42 on the back nine.

Liz Martin from Whitworth was fourth in the first round with an 87. She carded a 44-43. Mandy Cameron of George Fox shot a 44-44 and Natalie Nakamine of Puget Sound shot a 43-45 to tie for fifth place at 88.

Following Ueno on Willamette's team scoring sheet was Alex Johnson (Fr., Salem, OR/Blanchet Catholic School). Johnson shot a 98 (47-51).

The NWC Spring Classic will conclude with another round on Tuesday, March 31. Tee times are set to begin at 9 a.m. (PDT).
