Willamette Rowing Places Third in all Four Women's 8+ Races at Daffodil Cup

TACOMA, WASH. -- Willamette University won the women's novice 4+ race and took third place in all four women's 8+ events at the Daffodil Cup Regatta at American Lake on Saturday, March 28. WU also placed second in the women's varsity 4+ race and finished third in the men's novice 4+ and the men's second varsity 4+.

WU beat the University of Puget Sound by almost 12 seconds in the WN4+ and finished more than 45 seconds in front of Evergreen State College. Pacific Lutheran University placed fourth. Times in the WN4+ were Willamette at 8:38.0, Puget Sound at 8:49.5, Evergreen State at 9:26.8 and PLU at 10:00.7

In the big race of the day, with national rankings on the line, Western Washington University took first place in the women's varsity 8+. The Vikings won in 7:29.1. Puget Sound placed second at 7:30.9 and Willamette was third at 7:32.6. Overall, there were six crews in the event, with Seattle Pacific University in fourth place (7:34.4), Lewis & Clark College in fifth place (7:57.0) and Pacific Lutheran in sixth place (8:09.9).

Willamette was just 1.7 seconds behind UPS and only 3.5 seconds behind Western Washington, which has won four consecutive NCAA Division II titles. The Bearcats, ranked #11 in the nation, and Puget Sound, ranked #5 in the country, are the top ranked teams in the Pacific Region of NCAA Division III.

The top three teams placed in the same order in all four women's 8+ races. WWU won the second varsity 8+ in 7:38.39, while UPS finished in 7:43.48 and Willamette completed the race in 8:09.85. In the women's novice 8+, Willamette took third, edging out Pacific Lutheran by 1.44 seconds. The 'Cats also placed third in the second women's novice 8+.

In the women's varsity 4+, Willamette achieved second place in 8:04.8 out of six entries, as the Bearcats trailed only Seattle Pacific. SPU won the race in 7:57.2. The Bearcats edged out PLU for second, with the Lutes taking third at 8:05.5.

The Bearcat men's team achieved a solid result in the men's second varsity 4+. WU finished in 7:24.6, a bit more than three seconds behind the second place crew from Puget Sound (7:21.2). Washington State University won the race in 7:09.4.

WU also placed third in the men's novice 4+. Puget Sound won the event, with the Loggers reaching the finish in 7:46.4. Seattle Pacific crossed the line less than a second later to claim second place at 7:47.2. The 'Cats finished next in 8:35.6.

Up next for the Bearcats is the Northwest Collegiate Rowing Conference (NCRC) Invitational on Saturday, April 4. The regatta will be held at Vancouver Lake in Vancouver, Wash., starting at 8 a.m. (PDT).
