Parkman Named NCRC Women's Coach of the Year
SALEM, ORE. -- Willamette University rowing Head coach Susan Parkman has been chosen as the Northwest Collegiate Rowing Conference Women's Coach of the Year for the 2008-09 season. Parkman has guided the WU women's team to a national ranking this spring. The Bearcats were #8 in NCAA Division III in the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) Poll release on April 15.
The Coach of the Year honor is especially meaningful this year with four of the seven NCRC rowing teams nationally ranked. In addition to Willamette, the other teams ranked in the WV8+ are NCAA Division II opponents Western Washington University (#1) and Seattle Pacific University (#5) and NCAA Division III rival the University of Puget Sound (#5).
Willamette's WV8+ finished fourth at the NCRC Championships on April 18, but the Bearcats were just 2.07 seconds out of second place. WU's time was 7:34.86.
In addition, the 'Cats won the women's varsity 4+ and the women's novice lightweight 4+. Willamette finished third in the women's second varsity 8+.
NCRC members are Willamette, Puget Sound, Humboldt State University, Lewis & Clark College, Pacific Lutheran University, Seattle Pacific and Western Washington.
The next regatta for the Bearcats will be the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships on May 2-3. The action will be held at Lake Natoma near Sacramento, Calif.
