SALEM, ORE. -- Willamette University senior golfer Whitney Ueno (Hilo, HI/Hilo HS) is set to defend her Northwest Conference title from a year ago, as she battles for her third NWC title overall at this weekend's NWC Championship at the Apple Tree Golf Course in Yakima, Wash. The first round is scheduled for Saturday, April 25, with the final 18 holes slated for Sunday, April 26.

Saturday's round will start at 12 p.m. (PDT). On Sunday, the action will get underway at 8 a.m.

Ueno claimed her first NWC individual title as a freshman in 2006. Last year, she earned her second title, as she achieved a 36-hole score of 161 to win by five strokes. Her victory in 2008 was earned in cold and wintry conditions at the Aspen Lakes Country Club in Sisters, Ore.

She has already earned All-NWC honors for the fourth consecutive season. She won the NWC Fall Classic last semester and took first place at the NWC Spring Classic last month. The winner of each Classic tournament earns All-Conference recognition, along with the top six finishers at the NWC Championship.

Ueno and the rest of the Willamette women's golf team also will be participating in the team competition at Apple Tree this weekend. Last year, Pacific University claimed the overall NWC team championship.

The NWC Championship tournament counts for one-half of the overall NWC team title. The NWC Fall Classic and the NWC Spring Classic each count toward one-fourth of the team title. Current NWC team standings are: 1. Whitworth, 16 points; 2. Puget Sound, 12 points; 3. Pacific , 11 points and George Fox, 11 points; 5. Linfield, 10 points; 6. Willamette, 5 points; 7. Pacific Lutheran, 3 points; 8. Whitman, 2 points; 9. Lewis & Clark, 0 points.

Whitney Ueno is the defending individual champion in the NWC. She is seeking her third NWC title overall.
