Willamette Rows at Covered Bridge Regatta, Wins WV8+ and W2V8+
LOWELL, ORE. -- Willamette University won the women's varsity 8+ and the women's second varsity 8+ at the Covered Bridge Regatta on Dexter Lake, Saturday, April 11 near Lowell, Ore. The Bearcats won the WV8+ by 2.6 seconds over Seattle Pacific University, which took second place. In the W2V8+, Willamette was victorious by 10.14 seconds, with Humboldt State University in second.
Willamette's WV8+, ranked #7 in NCAA Division III, edged out Seattle Pacific University, tied for #4 in NCAA Division II. The Bearcats won in 7:16.0, while Seattle Pacific finished in 7:18.6. Pacific Lutheran University was third at 7:24.0. Overall, six shells raced in the WV8+.
Winning the women's varsity 8+ for Willamette was the crew of coxswain Erica Soma, stroke Geneva Hooten, 7-seat Kelsey White, 6-seat Hilary Andrus, 5-seat Christina Thorburn, 4-seat Sarah Schroeder, 3-seat Morgan Iveson, 2-seat Karina Hoogstede and bow Larissa Stiglich.
The Bearcats won the W2V8+ at 7:38.66. Humboldt State's second place time was 7:48.8. Competing for Willamette in the W2V8+ were coxswain Ariana Orford, stroke Heidi Hunt, 7-seat Leslie Schultz, 6-seat Emily Robinson, 5-seat Lea Griggs, 4-seat Libby Tobey, 3-seat Lyndsy Clark, 2-seat Kara Hafkey and bow Hannah Waller.
Willamette will row again next weekend on Saturday, April 18, at the Northwest Collegiate Rowing Conference (NCRC) Championship at Lake Stevens in Lake Stevens, Wash. Races are scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. (PDT).
NCRC members are Willamette, Humboldt State, Pacific Lutheran, Seattle Pacific, Lewis & Clark College, the University of Puget Sound and Western Washington University. The WV8+ looks to be a great battle between Western Washington, Willamette, Puget Sound and Seattle Pacific.
