Willamette Wins Two Races, Battles Puget Sound in WV8+, at NCRC Invitational

VANCOUVER, WASH. -- Willamette University earned first place finishes in the NCAA Division III women's second varsity 8+ and the women's lightweight 4+ at the Northwest Collegiate Rowing Conference (NCRC) Invitational on Saturday, April 4 at Vancouver Lake. The Bearcats also continued their rivalry with the University of Puget Sound in the Division III women's varsity 8+, with UPS winning by just over four seconds over WU in second place.

WU took first place in the WL4+ with a time of 8:15.76 to win by 31.20 seconds. The University of California-San Diego finished second at 9:06.96.

The Bearcats won the Division III W2V8+ in 7:47.07. Willamette reached the finish line just 1/100th of a second in front of Puget Sound, which took second in 7:47.08.

In the Division III WV8+ race, which featured two nationally ranked crews (UPS at #5 and Willamette at #8), the Loggers won at 7:23.03. Willamette concluded the race 4.37 seconds later in 7:27.40. Orange Coast College was third at 7:28.41. Overall, the Division III race featured six entries.

Willamette entered two crews in the men's varsity 4+. WU took second in the second heat in 7:06.07, as the Bearcats trailed only Rollins College (Fla.). Rollins won the heat in 6:52.70. The 'Cats were third in the first heat in 7:30.59. WU finished fourth and sixth in the MV4+ final.

The Bearcats were fifth in the women's novice 8+ and took fourth in the women's second novice 8+. Willamette also placed fourth in the men's varsity 8+ at 7:19.55. Puget Sound won the MV8+ in 6:45.36.

WU placed fifth in the combined women's varsity 8+ in 7:45.02. WU was nine seconds behind rival UPS. Western Washington, the four-time defending NCAA Division II National Champion, won the race in 7:10.70.

The NCRC Invitational was a tune-up for the NCRC Championships, which will be held at Vancouver Lake on Saturday, April 18. The NCRC Invitational included the seven NCRC member colleges and universities, plus several outside teams from the West Coast and Florida. NCRC members are Willamette, Puget Sound, Humboldt State University, Lewis & Clark College, Pacific Lutheran University, Seattle Pacific University and Western Washington University.
