Mattox Finishes Sixth in 3,000-Meter Steeplechase at NCAA Championships

MARIETTA, OHIO -- Willamette University freshman runner Kimber Mattox (Bend, OR/Bend HS/Cornell Univ.) took sixth place in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2009 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Friday, May 22 at Don Drumm Stadium on the Marietta College campus. Mattox earned All-America honors as one of the top eight finishers in the race.

Mattox recorded a time of 10:41.32 on Friday, as she achieved the second-fastest time in school history. Earlier this year, Mattox set the Willamette steeplechase record with a time of 10:38.05 to win the Northwest Conference championship and register an NCAA automatic qualifying mark.

Stephanie Perleberg from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse won the NCAA title as she crossed the finish line in 10:22.44, giving her the top time by an NCAA Division III athlete this spring. All eight runners who earned All-America status completed the race in less than 10:46, with five runners under 10:34. Jena Winnger (Sr., Bonney Lake, WA/Sumner HS) of Willamette competed, but did not finish.

Willamette's Brooke Smith (Sr., Idleyld Park, OR/Glide HS) participated in the final three events of the heptathlon on Friday. She took 18th place overall with a score of 4,173 points. Her top finish was in the javelin throw, as she placed third with a toss of 125'7". Ashley Huston from Hardin-Simmons University won the heptathlon with 5,244 points.

The NCAA Championships will conclude on Saturday, May 22. Willamette will be represented in two events on the final day.

Maddie Coffman (Jr., Boise, ID/Boise HS) is one of 12 athletes who will compete in the finals of the women's 1,500-meter run. She placed second in her heat on Thursday in 4:37.37. The 1,500 is slated to begin at 10:30 a.m. (PDT).

Coffman, Maddox and Winger are entered in the 5,000-meter run, set for 1:20 p.m. (PDT). Coffman was selected for the NCAA Championships with the third-best qualifying time at 17:02.33. Willamette is the only team with more than one athlete competing in the event.
