Piros Places Seventh in Javelin Throw at NCAA Championships

MARIETTA, OHIO -- Willamette University senior Grant Piros (Newberg, OR/Newberg HS) placed seventh in the men's javelin throw at the 2009 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday, May 21 at Marietta College. Piros registered a top throw of 195'2".

With the seventh place finish, Piros achieved All-America honors for the second year in a row. He also took seventh place at the 2008 NCAA Championships with a javelin throw of 193'10". The top eight finishers in each event receive All-America status. The winner of the men's javelin was Brock Solveson of Concordia University (Wisc.) with a distance of 208'5".

Also on Thursday, Maddie Coffman (Jr., Boise, ID/Boise HS) of Willamette took second in her preliminary heat and advanced to the finals of the women's 1,500-meter run. Coffman recorded a time of 4:37.37 in the second heat of the prelims. The top four finishers in each of the two heats, plus the next four fastest times, advanced to the finals, which are scheduled for Saturday, May 23 at 10:30 a.m. (PDT).

Three other Willamette athletes were in action on the first day of the NCAA Championships. Jacob Monroe (Sr., Keizer, OR/McNary HS) took 11th place in the men's hammer throw with a top distance of 168'8". Katie Peterson (So., Independence, OR/Central HS) placed 12th in the women's javelin as she recorded a throw of 132'1". Brooke Smith (Sr., Idleyld Park, OR/Glide HS) participated in the first four events of the heptathlon and was tied for 12th place with an overall score of 2,594 points.

Smith will conclude the heptathlon on Friday, May 22, when the final three events will be held, starting at 9 a.m. (PDT). On Thursday, she finished in the top half of competitors in the 100-meter hurdles, high jump and shot put.

Two additional Bearcats will compete in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase on Friday. They are Kimber Mattox (Fr., Bend, OR/Bend HS/Cornell Univ.) and Jena Winger (Sr., Bonney Lake, WA/Sumner HS). All 19 entrants in the steeplechase are scheduled to run in one heat at 2:35 p.m. (PDT).
