Ueno Earns All-West Region Honors from the NGCA
SALEM, ORE. -- After a successful senior campaign, Whitney Ueno (Hilo, HI/Hilo HS) of Willamette University has been named All-West Region by the National Golf Coaches Association. The NGCA, which includes nearly 500 coaches throughout the United States, is dedicated to educating, promoting and recognizing both its members and the student-athletes they represent.
Ueno, who graduated on May 17 with a bachelor's degree in Biology, finished her career this spring at the Northwest Conference Championship, where she finished tied for second place. As a freshman, Ueno burst onto the NWC golf scene with a first place finish at the NWC Fall Classic in 2005. In between these two events, Ueno accumulated an assortment of victories and awards.
As a freshman, she finished 10th at the 2006 NCAA Division III National Championship. She won 21 events during her career, including seven NWC championship or classic tournaments, on her way to being named First Team All-NWC four consecutive years.
During her senior season, Ueno’s scoring average was 81.1. Her best score was a 74 at the NWC Fall Classic at the Juniper Golf Club in Redmond, Ore. In her final year, she won 6 of 8 events and finished second in the other two. She was not selected when six individual golfers nationwide were chosen to join 21 teams at the NCAA Division III National Championship.
“Whitney was the dominant player in the conference again this year. She concluded her career as the best woman ever to tee it up in the NWC,” said Head Coach Tom Hibbard. “It's a shame that she wasn't able to take her game to the Division III national tournament this year.”
With her degree and career complete, Ueno will embark on the next chapter of her life. She was accepted into the competitive Japan Exchange and Teaching Program and will be teaching English in Japan.
