Oregon Tech Scores Late to Edge Bearcats, 1-0, in Men's Soccer
KLAMATH FALLS, ORE. -- Devin Torrey scored a goal for Oregon Tech with just 2:48 remaining in regulation to lead the Owls to a 1-0 victory over visiting Willamette University on Sunday, Sept. 6. Oregon Tech upped its record to 2-0 on the season, while Willamette fell to 1-2.
Torrey earned the game's only goal on a shot from 25 yards that hooked into the upper left corner of the net. The goal was unassisted and came while Willamette was short-handed following a red card issued to Luke Lagattuta (Sr., MF/D, Albuquerque, NM/Highland HS) at 71:38. Also issued at 71:38 were yellow cards to Sam Holcomb and Dustin Hirata of Oregon Tech.
The Owls held a 9-7 edge in shots and also owned a 6-2 advantage in shots on goal. Ian Van der Zwan of Oregon Tech topped all players with four shots, including three shots on goal. Lagattuta led Willamette with two shots.
Although Oregon Tech owned a slim advantage in shots, Willamette achieved an edge in corner kicks. The Bearcats received a total of seven corners, including five in the first half. The Owls finished with five corners.
Willamette goalkeeper Mark Bennett (Sr., Salt Lake City, UT/West HS) registered five saves. Oregon Tech goalie Tommy Burden was credited with two saves.
Two of Willamette's substitutes each took a shot on goal. Tim Ikehara-Martin (Fr., MF, Vancouver, WA/Heritage HS) forced Burden to make a save at 22:56. Mike McGrew (Fr., MF/F, Portland, OR/Grant HS) leveled a shot on target at 66:03, but Burden recorded a save.
WU attained three corner kicks during a 1:24 span in the first half, but was unable to convert any of the corners into a goal. Lagattuta shot wide following the second of the three corner kicks at 31:27.
Oregon Tech was called for 17 fouls. Willamette committed just eight fouls.
The Bearcats will play their next game on Friday, Sept. 11 in Tacoma, Wash., against North Park College (Illinois). Kickoff is slated for 12 p.m. (PDT) on the campus of the University of Puget Sound.
