Three Bearcats Reach Round of 16 in Singles at ITA Regional
WALLA WALLA, WASH. -- Three Willamette University tennis players have reached the Round of 16 at the Wilson/ITA Small College Northwest Regional Men's Tennis Championship,hosted by Whitman College. The Bearcats who have advanced are junior Matt Houser and freshmen Michael Baumgartner and Josh Wong.
Houser, seeded 14th, defeated Scott Sheldon of Pacific Lutheran University in the first round, 6-4, 6-4. In the second round, he outlasted Spencer Hing of Pacific University, 7-5, 5-7, 10-8, in a super tie-breaker played instead of a third set.
Baumgartner, who entered the tournament seeded 7th, received a bye in the first round. His second round match was against Kolin Wong of Pacific. Baumgartner prevailed, 6-2, 6-1.
Wong also received a first round bye as the #8 seed. In the second round, he defeated David Deming of Whitman, 6-0, 6-1.
Action will continue in singles and doubles through Monday, Sept. 28.
