Widing Hits Schoettgen with 86-Yard TD Pass in 20-13 Win over Cal Lutheran
SALEM, ORE. -- Freshman quarterback Brian Widing (Oregon City, OR/Canby Union HS) completed 5 of 9 passes for 164 yards, including an 86-yard scoring strike to Scott Schoettgen (Jr., WR, Columbia, CA/Sonora HS), as Willamette University held off California Lutheran University, 20-13, at McCulloch Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 12. Deon Horne (Sr., TB, Issaquah, WA/Liberty HS) rushed for 143 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries for the Bearcats.
Schoettgen finished the game with five catches for 191 yards. His 32-yard catch from freshman quarterback Kevin Ramay (Simi Valley, CA/Grace Brethren HS) on 3rd-and-18 from the Willamette 12-yard line with just over two minutes remaining allowed WU to nearly run out the clock.
The Bearcats did have to punt, but Justin Hauley of CLU was tackled on the return for a 3-yard loss at the California Lutheran 28-yard line as time expired.
Willamette improved to 1-1 on the season. California Lutheran, playing its season opener, fell to 0-1.
The long touchdown pass from Widing to Schoettgen came with 4:45 left in the opening quarter and gave the Bearcats a 7-0 lead. Willamette remained in front by the same score at halftime.
Jackson Damron kicked a 34-yard field goal for the Kingsmen with 12:42 left in the third quarter to cut the lead to 7-3.
Horne scored for Willamette on a 9-yard run with 2:21 remaining in the quarter to increase the Bearcats' lead to 10 points. The conversion attempt failed, but WU led 13-3. Widing hit Schoettgen with a 44-yard pass for the key play of the six-play, 92-yard drive.
The Bearcats added a 4-yard touchdown run by Mikey Lemon (Jr., FL, McMinnville, OR/McMinnville HS/Linfield College) with 14:31 to go in the game. Mitchell Rowan (So., PK/P, Cotati, CA/Rancho Cotate HS) kicked the PAT, as Willamette took a 20-3 lead.
California Lutheran scored two times to pull within a touchdown. Damron connected on a 45-yard field goal at the 9:00 mark and Matt O'Brien hauled in a 24-yard touchdown pass from Jericho Toilolo with 3:40 left. Willamette kept the ball for the remainder of the game, but had to overcome three false start penalties before Schoettgen's final big catch.
The Bearcat defense limited Toilolo to 15 of 30 passing for 192 yards. Christian Edwards caught five passes for 73 yards and O'Brien added four receptions for 67 yards for the Kingsmen. Brian Stuart rushed for 140 yards on 20 carries to gain nearly all of CLU's 146 rushing yards.
WU's pass rush registered nine quarterback sacks during the game. Five of the sacks occurred in the first half, when Toilolo was just 3 of 9 for 32 yards.
Willamette defenders also produced a goal-line stand late in the first quarter after the Bearcats scored the game's first touchdown. Derek Wilson returned the ensuing kickoff 40 yards to the CLU 46. The Kingsmen used four consecutive running plays, including a 13-yarder by Toilolo and a 20-yarder by Stuart, to claim 1st-and-Goal at the WU 9-yard line.
Stuart ran the ball on each of the next three plays, advancing California Lutheran to the five, three and one, respectively. On fourth down, Toilolo was stopped short of the end zone by inside linebackers Ralph Pineda (Jr., Whittier, CA/Cathedral HS/San Jose State Univ.) and Andrew Ross (Sr., Petaluma, CA/Petaluma HS).
Harmon Bruno (So., OLB, Danville, CA/San Ramon Valley HS) topped the Willamette defensive chart with 12 total tackles, including two sacks. Ross finished with 10 tackles, while Walter Robinson, II (Jr., DE, Altadena, CA/Cathedral HS) added nine tackles and Pineda earned seven.
Robinson also provided two quarterback sacks. Pineda and Cory Lowe (Sr., DE, Beaverton, OR/Beaverton HS) each contributed 1.5 sacks. Blaze Rogers (So., CB, Lahaina, HI/Lahainaluna HS) intercepted a CLU pass at the Willamette 49-yard line late in the third quarter. Mikey Lemon's touchdown followed six plays later.
WU starting quarterback Ryan Whitcomb (Sr., Oak View, CA/Nordhoff HS/College of the Canyons) was unable to play following an injury in the season-opener at Concordia College-Moorhead last week. Widing and Ramay shared the quarterback position against California Lutheran.
Willamette will play at Southern Oregon University on Saturday, Sept. 19. Kickoff in Ashland, Ore., is set for 3 p.m. (PDT).
