SALEM, ORE. -- The Willamette University men's basketball team spent the morning of Saturday, October 10 volunteering at the Union Gospel Mission Women's and Children's Shelter. Eleven players, along with Head Coach Kip Ioane and Assistant Coach Josh Erickson, worked for three hours at the shelter.

The players did a variety of outdoor work, including brush trimming, lawn edging, leaf blowing and lawn mowing. After finishing, the team was given a tour of the facility and witnessed first-hand the work and sacrifice that happens at the shelter on a daily basis.

The men's basketball team opens the season on Tuesday, Nov. 3 in an exhibition game at NCAA Division I opponent Boise State University. Willamette returns eight players and has added six freshmen to their 2009-10 roster.
