PORTLAND, ORE. -- Willamette University lost to Portland State University, 7-0, in men's tennis on Saturday, Jan. 30, in the spring season-opener for the Bearcats. Portland State, which competes in NCAA Division I, improved to 1-1 on the season. Willamette, a member of NCAA Division III, is 0-1.

The match was played under the 7-point scoring system used by Division I, in which the team that wins two or three doubles matches earns a single "doubles point." As a result, although Willamette won #3 doubles, the Bearcats did not receive a point for that victory in the team score.

Willamette's win at #3 doubles was earned by Michael Baumgartner (Fr., Albany, OR/West Albany HS) and Luke Lagattuta (Sr., Albuquerque, NM/Highland HS). They defeated Matt Erickson and Jeff Cero of Portland State, 8-5.

PSU claimed the "doubles point" by winning #1 and #2 doubles. At #1, Chris Rice and Sean Eberle downed Willamette's team of Cody Ferguson (So., North Bend, OR/North Bend HS/Western Oregon Univ.) and Joshua Wong (Fr., Hilo, HI/Hilo HS), 8-4. At #2, Alex VanDerschelden and Kyle Erickson of PSU held off Matthew Houser (Jr., Vancouver, WA/Evergreen HS) and Micah Mack (Sr., Wenatchee, WA/Wenatchee HS), 8-5.

The #1 singles match was a high quality battle between Rice of Portland State and Houser of Willamette. Rice triumphed in the first set 7-5, then won the match by taking the second set, 6-3.

Willamette returns to action on Friday, Jan. 5 with its home opener against another NCAA Division I opponent, Seattle University. Match time is scheduled for 1 p.m. (PST) at the WU Tennis Courts, but the match may be moved to the Courthouse Tennis Club if weather forces the action indoors.

Since Willamette will be playing at home, the teams will use the 9-point scoring system of NCAA Division III, in which each match is worth one point in the team score.
