Bearcats Fall to Stags, 3-2, on Sacrifice Fly in Ninth Inning
CLAREMONT, CALIF. -- David Spiller of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps hit a sacrifice fly to center field with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the ninth inning to drive in the winning run, as the Stags defeated Willamette University, 3-2, on Friday, Feb. 26. CMS improved to 6-5 on the season. Willamette dropped to 2-3.
Willamette starter Devin Grindy (Jr., RHP, Washougal, WA/Camas HS) threw eight complete inning for the Bearcats and allowed just two runs and seven hits. CMS scored once in the second inning and once in the third inning to build a 2-0 lead.
Steve Danaway doubled to start the bottom of the second inning for the Stags. He stole third before scoring on a ground out by Jason Rehhaut. In the third inning, Travis Nishioka singled and stole second with two outs. He crossed the plate on a base hit by Max Rose. The Stags eventually had runners at the corners following an infield error, but Grindy struck out Rehhaut to end the threat.
The Bearcats tied the game in the top of the fourth, when Derek Collins (Fr., 1B, Yorba Linda, CA/Esperanza HS) hit a two-out double with two runners on base. Tim Schilf (So., 3B, Honolulu, HI/Iolani School) and Max Stepan (Jr., C, Pueblo, CO/Pueblo County HS) reached home on the play. Neither team scored again until the Stags plated the winning run in the ninth.
Center fielder Tyson Giza (Fr., Salem, OR/Sprague HS) of Willamette made five putouts in center field. Three of his catches were spectacular plays on a diving catch, a catch at the warning tack and a play at the fence.
Adam Reid (So., OF, San Jose, CA/Lynbrook HS) went to center field once the sacrifice opportunity was created by CMS in the bottom of the ninth. Reid also made a quality catch at the warning track, but the ball was hit deep enough to prevent him from throwing out the winning run at the plate.
The Stags recorded eight hits during the game and limited Willamette to six hits. Brian Gose was 2 for 3 with a walk for CMS, while Nishioka went 2 for with a run scored. The Bearcats were led by Stepan and Mitchell Rowan (So., RF, Cotati, CA/Rancho Cotate HS), who each went 2 for 4 at the plate.
CMS starter Alex Sunderland threw five innings and gave up two runs and five hits. He achieved five strikeouts.
Reliever Chad Hadzinsky, 1-0, tossed the last four innings for the Stags to register the win. He allowed one hit and one walk, while earning three strikeouts. WU relief pitcher Joseph Pelletier (Fr., LHP, La Habra Heights, CA/St. John Barco HS) fell to 0-1 with the loss.
WU and CMS will attempt to play a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 27 starting at 11 a.m. (PST), but the weather forecast for Southern California calls for rain during at least part of the day. Willamette is scheduled to complete the weekend trip with a single game at Chapman University on Sunday, Feb. 28 at 12 p.m. (PST).
