Tufo Competes for San Diego of the Arizona Winter League
SAN DIEGO, CALIF. -- Former Willamette University third baseman David Tufo (Sr. in 2009, San Bruno, CA/Burlingame HS) is playing baseball for the San Diego Surf Dawgs of the Arizona Winter League. The AWL is affiliated with the independent Golden Baseball League.
Players compete in the Arizona Winter League in hopes of signing on with a Major League organization or with a team in an independent league such as the Golden Baseball League.
In San Diego's first 12 games of the season, Tufo achieved a .333 batting average and a .733 on-base percentage. He has played third base and second base for the Surf Dawgs.
At Willamette, Tufo played in 126 games with 109 starts, mostly at third base. He earned 102 hits career hits, including 15 doubles and five home runs. He scored 76 times and produced 49 RBIs. He received 42 walks over the past four seasons and was 13 of 17 on stolen bases. Tufo finished seventh on WU's all-time list with 18 career sacrifices (2 flies, 16 bunts) on offense. He also recorded 78 putouts and 168 assists on defense.
During his senior season in 2009, Tufo played in 36 games (33 starts) and earned Honorable Mention All-Northwest Conference recognition. In 2009, he scored 23 runs, hit three doubles and pounded out two home runs. Tufo hit .295 when batting with two outs (13 of 44) and .500 (3 of 6) with a runner at third base and less than two outs in the inning. He earned 64 assists on defense.

The 2010 Willamette baseball team will open its season this weekend (Feb. 19-20) at the Northwest Nazarene Tournament in Nampa, Idaho. WU will take on Oregon Institute of Technology on Friday, Feb. 19 at 10 a.m. (MST). On Saturday, Feb. 20, the Bearcats will battle Whitworth University at 10 a.m. (MST) and will face Northwest Nazarene University at 7 p.m. (MST).
