Willamette to Battle Puget Sound in Season Opener on Saturday

SALEM, ORE. -- The Willamette University women's tennis tennis will begin its spring season by hosting the University of Puget Sound at the Courthouse Tennis Club (1379 Madison NE) on Saturday, Feb.6. The Northwest Conference action is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. (PST).

The Bearcats had a strong fall season. Natalia Agarycheva (Jr., Vancouver, WA/Prairie HS/Univ. of Northern Colorado) reached the finals of the Wilson/ITA Small College Northwest Regional before losing to Abby Olbrich of Linfield in three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Agarycheva and Shannon Palmer (So., Salem, OR/Sprague HS) reached the finals of the Wilson/ITA Regional in doubles before falling to Olbrich and Sallie Katter, 8-6.

In the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) fall regional rankings for NCAA Division III, Agarycheva is ranked #9 in the West Region in singles. Agarycheva and Palmer are ranked #6 in the West Region in doubles.

During last year's spring season, Willamette tied for fifth in the Northwest Conference standings. The Bearcats qualified for the NWC Tournment and finished in sixth place.
