Bearcats Compete against Southern Oregon in Dual Track and Field Meet
ASHLAND, ORE. -- Willamette University won eight women's events and five men's events during a dual track and field meet against Southern Oregon University on Saturday, March 13 in Ashland, Ore. The Bearcats also recorded numerous Northwest Conference qualifying marks.
Jennifer Luecht (Sr., Milwaukie, OR/Rex Putnam HS) of Willamette won the women's 400-meter dash with a time of 59.73 seconds. Jaela Dinsmore (So., Hines, OR/Burns HS) added a victory in the 100-meter dash at 13.13 seconds.
WU's Kimber Mattox (So., Bend, OR/Bend HS/Cornell University) took first place in the women's 1,500-meter run by completing the race in 4:50.59. Mattox also won the 800-meter run.
Christina Edholm (Sr., Pleasanton, CA/Foothill HS) provided WU with a win in the women's shot put, as she registered a throw of 40'2.75".
Additional first place finishes for the Willamette women's team were registered by Ginny Hodges in the high jump and the long jump, and by Katie Peterson in the hammer throw.
For the WU men's team, Nate Dick (Sr., Stanfield OR/Stanfield HS/Southern Oregon Univ.) took first place in the men's 100-yard dash with a time of 11.36 seconds. Josh Clothier (Jr., Walla Walla, WA/Walla Walla HS) won the shot put on a personal-record toss of 50'6.25". Clothier's throw was just two inches short of the NCAA Division II provisional qualifying standard.
Trevor Bassett-Smith (Sr., Keizer, OR/McNary HS/Western Oregon Univ.) of WU was the winner in the men's hammer throw. He recorded a personal-best distance of 161'8".
The Bearcats won the men's 4 x 100-meter relay in a close race.
Willamette's team of Dick, Tristan Bodding-Long (Sr., Woodinville, WA/Woodinville HS), Andy Meuser (Sr., Portland, OR/Woodrow Wilson HS) and Neal Howard (So., Seattle, WA/Ballard HS) achieved a time of 42.16 seconds. Southern Oregon finished just nine one-hundredths of a second later at 42.25. Willamette's winning time was 0.26 away from the NCAA Division III provisional qualifying standard of 41.90 seconds.
Also winning an event for WU was Nicholas Rebol (Jr., Cottonwood, CA/Red Bluff Union HS). Rebol took first place in the men's 1,500-meter run.
Trevor May (Jr., Florence, OR/Siuslaw HS) placed second for WU in the men's 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.63 seconds. Dennis Olstedt of SOU won the race in 15.32 seconds. Evin Colignon (Jr., Poulsbo, WA/Charles Wright Academy) of Willamette placed fifth with a career-best time of 16.13 seconds.
Willamette's next track and field action in scheduled for March 18-19 at the Charles Bowles Classic. The Bearcats will host the event at the Charles Bowles Track.
