Torgerson is Chosen NWC Pitcher Student-Athlete of the Week
SALEM, ORE. -- Junior right-handed pitcher Chris Torgerson (Sacramento, CA/Jesuit HS) of Willamette University has been named Northwest Conference Baseball Pitcher Student-Athlete of the Week for his efforts in the Bearcats' series at Pacific Lutheran University this past weekend.
Torgerson threw a complete-game five-hitter against the high-powered Pacific Lutheran offense on Sunday, March 28, helping lead the Bearcats to a 7-0 victory. The Lutes entered the game after scoring 89 runs in their previous five games. PLU was averaging 10.2 runs per game for the season, but managed just one double and four singles versus Torgerson.
Willamette provided Torgerson with plenty of run support. The Bearcats plated three runs in the first inning and held a 5-0 lead after two innings. WU added another run in the fifth and one run in the ninth.
Meanwhile, Torgerson stayed ahead in in the count throughout the game. He recorded five strikeouts, including two in the ninth inning. He allowed one walk and one hit batsmen. He limited the PLU offense to a .167 batting average.
Torgerson is now 3-2 on the season with a 5.65 earned run average. He ranks second on the team with 28 2/3 innings pitched.
The Bearcats are 7-13 on the season, including 4-8 in the NWC. Willamette is scheduled to play a single non-conference game at Lewis & Clark College on Wednesday, Mach 31 at 4 p.m. (PDT).
WU is slated to host Pacific University in a three-game NWC series this weekend. The Bearcats and the Boxers will play one game on Friday, April 2 at 3 p.m. (PDT) and will conclude the series with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 3 starting at 12 p.m. (PDT).
