Wildcats Sweep Doubleheader from Bearcats, 11-0 and 14-1
McMINNVILLE, ORE. -- Linfield College defeated Willamette University in both games of a Northwest Conference doubleheader on Saturday, March 13 at Roy Helser Field. The Wildcats won the first game, 11-0, and took the second game, 14-1.
Willamette fell to 5-8 overall, 2-3 in the NWC. Linfield improved to 12-5 on the season, 4-1 in the NWC.
In the first game, Linfield held a 2-0 lead after four innings and a 4-0 lead through six. The Wildcats pulled away by plating two runs in the seventh and adding five runs in the eighth.
Kelson Brown went 2 for 3 with a homer, five RBIs and three runs scored for the Wildcats in the opener. Tyson Smith was 3 for 5 with three runs and Zach Boskovich went 3 for 4 with a homer, two runs and two RBIs. Cole Bixenman earned a double and a home run in five at bats.
For Willamette, Derek Collins (Fr., 1B, Yorba Linda, Ca/Esperanza HS/Fullerton College) and Galen Duff (Fr., 2B, Spokane, WA/Gonzaga Prep) each recorded two hits in the opener. Collins was 2 for 4, while Duff went 2 for 2 with a sacrifice bunt. Mitchell Rowan (So., DH/RF, Cotati, CA/Rancho Cotate HS) recorded WU's only extra-base hit, a double in the ninth inning.
Linfield pitcher Ryan Larson tossed a complete game. He allowed seven hits and recorded six strikeouts, while allowing no walks. He upped his record to 3-2. \
Willamette starter Devin Grindy (Jr., RHP, Washougal, WA/Camas HS) pitched five innings, earned three strikeouts and gave up two walks. He allowed four runs, but just three were earned. Grindy took the loss and went to 1-2 on the season.
Four runs in the first inning and two in the second gave Linfield a 6-0 advantage early in the second game. The Wildcats finished the game with 15 hits, while three Linfield pitchers combined on a three-hitter.
Brown and Bixenman each belted a homer for the Wildcats in Game #2. Brown was 3 for 6 with three runs and four RBIs. Bixenman went 2 for 4 with two runs and four RBIs. Third baseman Dustin Smith earned three hits and three runs in four at bats.
Willamette's hits in the second game were by Rowan, Duff and Doug Bloom (Jr., SS, Salem, OR/South Salem HS). Duff was 1 for 1 with a run scored, while Rowan ended the game 1 for 3 with an RBI.
Pitcher Garrett Dorn started for Linfield and completed six innings. He struck out five batters and gave up WU's only run. He received the win and improved to 3-1 this season. Chris Torgerson (Jr., RHP, Sacramento, CA/Jesuit HS) fell to 2-2 with the loss.
The Bearcats and the Wildcats will complete the three-game series on Sunday, March 14. Game time at Roy Helser Field is set for 12 p.m. (PDT).
