Bearcats Excel at the Covered Bridge Regatta
EUGENE, ORE. -- The Willamette University rowing teams won three events and finished in second place in the overall Collegiate Team Points Trophy Standings on Saturday, April 10, during the Covered Bridge Regatta held at Dexter Lake. The women's varsity 8+, the women's junior varsity 8+ and the women's varsity 4+ all captured first place finishes.
Willamette's WV8+ finished just ahead of Seattle Pacific University. The Bearcats recorded a time of 7:37.19, while Seattle Pacific finished in 7:38.54. SPU was ranked fifth in the nation in NCAA Division II entering the race. The Bearcats were ranked #9 in the NCAA Division III rankings.
Competing for WU in the WV8+ were coxswain Erica Soma (Jr., Scotts Valley, CA/Scotts Valley HS), 8-seat Sarah Schroeder (So., Wilsonville, OR/Wilsonville HS), 7-seat Kelsey White (So., Camp Sherman, OR/Sisters HS), 6-seat Hilary Andrus (Sr., Chimacum, WA/Chimacum HS), 5-seat Lea Griggs (So., Woodbury, MN/Math & Science Academy), Heidi Hunt (So., Bellingham, WA/Sehome HS) at the 4-seat, 3-seat Lars Stiglich (Fr., Vancouver, WA/Columbia River HS), Marguex Hunter (Fr., Ridgefield, WA/Jesuit HS) at the 2-seat, and bow Gwen Hryciw (Fr., Portland, OR/Sunset HS).
The W2V8+ for the Bearcats crossed the line with a time of 8:09.40 to finish ahead of second place Humboldt State University. HSU achieved a time of 8:22.00. The Bearcats also grabbed the third place spot in the W2V8+ race with a time of 8:29.93.
The W2V8+ team included coxswain Kayla Johnson (Fr., Onalaska, WA/Onalaska HS), 8-seat Caroline Cahill (So., Maplewood, NJ/Univ. of Wisc.), 7-seat Sarah Ferrier (Jr., Seattle, WA/Roosevelt HS), 6-seat Karina Hoogstede (So., Poulsbo, WA/North Kitsap HS), 5-seat Morgan Iveson (So., Reno, NV/Reno HS), 4-seat Emily Mitchell (Sr. Vancouver, WA/Columbia River HS), 3-seat Kate Burns (So., Santa Cruz, CA/Sandpoint Sr. HS), 2-seat Libby Tobey (So., Salt Lake City, UT/Skyline HS) and bow Lacey Ellingson (Sr., Shoreview, MN/Mounds View HS).
WU's WV4+ rowed its way to a huge victory with a time of 8:03.20. The second place team from Humboldt finished in 8:24.30, giving Willamette the victory by more than 21 seconds. The WV4+ team included coxswain Stiglich, 4-seat Schroeder, 3-seat White, 2-seat Andrus and bow Griggs.
In individual action, Willamette's Andrus finished in second place in the women's master's 1x race. Andrus finished with a time of 4:24.74. First place finisher Catherine Humblet, who is a former National Team member, finished with a time of 4:18.32.
The women's novice 4+ team grabbed another second place finish for WU with a time of 8:41.59. The Bearcats finished less than eight seconds behind first place Humboldt (8:33.90).
In other action, the men's novice 4+ finished in third place. The women's novice 8+ and the men's varsity 8+ each finished in fourth place in its respective race. The men's varsity 4+ took fifth place in 7:50.67, just over ten seconds behind the first place team from Lewis & Clark College at 7:40.10.
Willamette finished with 120 points in the Collegiate Team Points Trophy standings. Humboldt State won the trophy with 137 points. Lewis & Clark College placed third with 87 points and the University of Oregon was fourth with 81 points.
The Bearcats will compete at the NCRC Championships at Vancouver Lake, Wash. on Saturday, April 17. Rowing will begin at 8 a.m. (PDT).
