Willamette Sweeps Doubles, Defeats Puget Sound 5-0 at NWC Tournament

YAKIMA, WASH. -- Willamette University swept doubles, including a close victory from Joshua Wong (Fr., Hilo, HI/Hilo HS) and Cody Ferguson (So., North Bend, OR/North Bend HS/Western Oregon Univ.) at the #1 position, starting the Bearcats on their way to a 5-0 win over the University of Puget Sound in the first round of the Northwest Conference Tournament. WU improved to 12-7 overall, while UPS ended its season at 5-12.

The win at the Yakima Tennis Club on Friday, April 16, advanced the Bearcats into the semifinals later in the day. WU was set to take on Linfield College in one semifinal at 4:30 p.m. (PDT).

In the other semifinal, regular season champion Whitman College was scheduled to take on Pacific Lutheran University. PLU reached the semifinals by defeating Whitworth University, 5-4, in the first round Friday morning.

The semifinal winners will move into the NWC Tournament championship match on Saturday, April 17. The title match is scheduled to get underway at 12 p.m. (PDT).

Wong and Ferguson prevailed for Willamette in a strong battle at #1 doubles, holding off Mike Cutter and Nick Kelly, 9-7.

WU increased its lead to 3-0 with triumphs at #2 and #3 doubles. In the #2 match, Matt Houser (Jr., Vancouver, WA/Evergreen HS) and Micah Mack (Sr., Wenatchee, WA/Wenatchee HS) defeated Brian Burger and Alex Harrison, 8-3.

At #3 doubles, Michael Baumgartner (Fr., Albany, OR/West Albany HS) and Luke Lagattuta (Sr., Albuquerque, NM/Highland HS) moved past Andrew Timmons and Scooter Sabel, 8-4. Baumgarner and Lagattuta improved to 12-3 this season.

Wong shut down Cutter in the first set at #1 singles, 6-0. Wong added a 6-3 win in the second set. At #4 singles, Houser downed Sabel, 6-3, in the first set, before sweeping through the second set, 6-0. The wins by Wong and Houser clinched the overall match for Willamette. The remaining singles matches were not finished.

When the match ended, WU was in control of #2 and #3 singles. Baumgartner owned a 6-2, 4-2 lead over Kelly in the #2 match, while Ferguson was in front of Harrison, 6-2, 2-0, at #3 singles.
