Miller Named Freshman of the Year by Chemistry Department
SALEM, ORE. -- Brigit Miller (Fr., Olympia, WA/Olympia HS), a setter on the Willamette University volleyball team, was named the Freshman of the Year by the Willamette Chemistry Department.
Miller is undecided on her major but took two chemistry classes this spring, Physical Chemistry I and Organic Chemistry I. She excelled on the volleyball court as well as in the chemistry lab.
The freshman setter played in all 24 matches and started 23. She led the team with 865 assists and averaged 9.51 assists per game. She had a season high 61 assists against Linfield College on Oct. 28, helping the Bearcats defeat the Wildcats 3-2.
Miller also was a talented server, finishing the season with 24 aces. She recorded four aces on two different occasions, against Central College (Iowa) and Lewis & Clark College.
Miller was one of 11 new members on the 2009 volleyball team that finished the season 11-13 overall and 8-8 in the Northwest Conference. The Bearcats went 6-2 in the second half of conference play, losing only to nationally ranked University of Puget Sound and Pacific Lutheran University.
The team returns 13 members and will add seven new players for the 2010 season. Head Coach Tom Shoji enters his third season at the helm for Willamette.
