Rowing Cruises into WIRA Grand Finals
SACRAMENTO, CALIF. -- The Willamette University rowing teams qualified five boats for Sunday's Grand Finals action at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships on Saturday, May 1 on Lake Natoma in Sacramento, Calif. In addition to those five boats, four Bearcat shells completed action on Saturday.
The women's lightweight 8+ finished in second place in the Grand Final with a time of 7:50.5. The Bearcats finished behind NCAA Division I opponent Stanford University, as the Cardinal earned a time of 7:04.2.
Stanford is ranked #2 in the nation in the WL8+ and Willamette is ranked #15.
Also for Willamette, the women's novice 8+ took first place in the Third Final. WU crossed the line with a time of 8:12.1. The University of California Irvine finished in second place, just over six seconds behind Willamette at 8:18.8.
The WU men's varsity 4+ finished in fourth place in the Petite Final with a time of 7:48.9. The University of California Santa Barbara took first in the event.
The Bearcats grabbed a third place finish in the Petite Final of the men's novice 4+. WU crossed the line with a time of 7:47.9 in the Petite Final. Santa Clara University won the race in 7:35.0.
Willamette will have six boats competing on Sunday (May 2). The women's varsity 4+ will start the action for the Bearcats at 8 a.m. (PDT) in the Grand Finals.
The men's pair, women's lightweight 4+ and the women's varsity 8+ all finished in second place in their respective heats on Saturday and will compete in the Grand Finals.
Also competing for the Bearcats will be the the women's junior varsity 8+, rowing in its Grand Final and the men's varsity 8+ in the Third Final.
