Summer League Action Continues for Bearcat Baseball Players
SALEM, ORE. -- Willamette University baseball players have recorded solid statistics while playing for summer league teams since the end of the academic year. Overall, a total of 15 Bearcats are playing for 10 teams in six states.
Tyson Giza (Fr., Salem, OR/South Salem HS), the player competing closest to the Willamette campus, is batting .419 for the Withnell Dodgers, who are an American Legion team. The Dodgers play home games at John Lewis Field, which is WU's home diamond during the spring and is located in Bush's Pasture Park in Salem, Ore.
Giza has achieved 31 hits in 74 at bats. He has scored 20 runs and recorded 10 RBIs. He has pounded out thee doubles, one triple and one home run. He has walked 14 times and has just three strikeouts. He owns a solid .514 slugging percentage and has been successful on 16 of 20 stolen base attempts.
Adam Reid (So., OF, San Jose, CA/Lynbrook HS) has earned a .306 batting average for the Nor-Cal Longhorns in San Jose, Calif. He is 11 of 36 at the plate with six runs and six RBIs. He has seen action in 18 games and has a .390 on-base percentage.
Right-handed pitcher Blake Paisley (So., Saratoga, Ca/Saratoga HS) also is playing for Nor-Cal. He has thrown 18 1/3 innings in eight appearances and has a 4.42 earned run average. He has registered 15 strikeouts on the season.
Willamette has three players on the Atwater Aviators in Atwater, Calif. All three have hit their stride in recent weeks.
Doug Bloom (So., SS, Salem, OR/South Salem HS) is batting .243 for the season, but has batted .350 in his most recent 20 at bats. For the season, Bloom has scored 11 runs and achieved nine RBIs, while stealing seven bases and walking 20 times.
T.C. Lee (Jr., LF, Lafayette, CA/Acalanes HS) owns a .268 batting average, including .360 in his last 25 at bats. He has belted four doubles and one triple, to go along with nine RBIs, during his current surge at the plate.
Likewise, Max Stepan (Jr., C/DH, Pueblo, CO/Pueblo County HS) has been hot at the plate in recent games. He has connected on 11 hits in his last 30 at bats for a .367 average.
He has recorded at least one hit in eight consecutive games, while earning four doubles and 10 RBIs during the streak. He is batting .200 for the season.
Mitchell Rowan (So., DH/RF, Cotati, CA/Rancho Cotate HS), who led the Bearcats in hitting this spring, is batting .267 for the Folsom Pioneers in Folsom, Calif. Rowan has seen action in 25 games with 22 starts. He has earned 23 hits in 86 at bats and has scored 15 runs.
Rowan has recorded 13 RBIs and has been successful on 10 of 11 stolen bases. On defense, he has recorded 16 putouts with no errors. He has helped Folsom achieve a 20-11 overall record.
Two Bearcats are playing for the Manitowac Bandits in Manitowac, Wisc. Galen Duff (Fr., 2B, Spokane, WA/Gonzaga Prep) is hitting .293 (22 of 75) with a .360 slugging percentage. He has scored 12 runs and earned seven RBIs, while pounding out five doubles. He is 4 for 5 on stolen bases. Parker Johnson (Fr., RHP, Carlsbad, CA/La Costa Canyon HS) has achieved a 2-2 record on the mound, while striking out 29 batters in 31 innings pitched. He as a 5.23 earned run average and has allowed just 16 walks.
Jake Jones (Fr., RHP, Wilsonville, OR/Wilsonville HS) has registered a 1.63 ERA for the Portland Ports in the West Coast League - Portland. Jones has struck out 11 batters in 11 innings pitched, while earning a 1-0 record and one save.
Statistics are not available at this time for several Bearcats who are playing summer baseball. In the West Coast League - Portland, Dylan Summers (So., C, Lake Oswego, OR/Lakeridge HS) is playing for the Portland Ports and Kyle Kirwan (Fr., 1B, Hillsboro, OR/Glencoe HS) is competing for the Portland Bucks.
Sky Kelley (Fr., RF, Canby, OR/Jesuit HS) is a member of the Triple Play Hornets in Tacoma, Wash. Sam Sopko (Fr., OF, Missoula, MT/Loyola Sacred Heart HS) is playing American Legion baseball for the Missoula Mavericks in Missoula, Mont. Alex Brown (Fr., Farmington, UT/Davis HS) is a catcher for the Woods Cross Cats in Davis, Utah.
