Bearcats Play Cardinal and Gold Scrimmage
SALEM, ORE. -- Nearly every player on the Willamette University football roster saw action on Friday, Aug. 27 in the team's annual Cardinal and Gold intrasquad scrimmage at McCulloch Stadium. The Bearcats ran approximately 50 plays, plus several plays for each portion of the kicking game.
The scrimmage provided a chance for the Bearcats to experience game situations in advance of next week's season opener at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Willamette will be playing UW-Stevens Point on Saturday, Sept. 4 at 12 p.m. (PDT). The Bearcats are ranked #18 in the D3football.com Top 25 Preseason Poll and Stevens Point is ranked #16.
Referees from the area volunteered their time to officiate the scrimmage. Afterward, the head referee explained rule changes and answered questions from the team.
In addition to the Cardinal and Gold scrimmage, the team and parents in attendance received a barbecue meal. The meal was provided by WU alumnus Randy Traeger '79 of Traeger Industries (which makes Traeger Pellet Grills) and well held on the mezzanine patio near the north end zone. A large Traeger grill was used at the barbecue.
Following the meal, Head Coach Mark Speckman spoke to the parents about Willamette's upcoming season. Speckman is entering his 13th year as WU's head coach. He has a career record of 71-50 (.587), including 19-3 the past two seasons.
