SALEM, ORE. -- A tradition of community service will continue for the Willamette University football team on Saturday, Aug. 21 when the Bearcats provide volunteer labor on several beautification projects throughout the Salem area as part of the United Way Days of Caring. It is the seventh consecutive year that the WU football team has participated.

The Days of Caring are sponsored by the United Way of the Mid-Willamette Valley. In recent years, more than 1,000
volunteers have completed single-day service projects in order to clean up and improve buildings and landscapes at public locations and health and human service organizations. This year, the Days of Caring are scheduled for Sept. 6-11, but the Bearcats will be contributing their efforts a bit early due to the team's practice and game schedule.

This year, Willamette's 132 football players, plus many of the coaches, will help out at seven locations in the area. The list of places set to receive visual facelifts from the Bearcats are: West Salem High School, Chemawa Indian School, fire hydrants near the Willamette University campus, Clare Bridge (Alzheimer's and dementia care live-in facility), Liberty House, Mid-Valley Women's Crisis Service and the Northgate Peace and Forgiveness Community Garden.

Bearcat athletes will begin working on their various projects at 8:30 a.m. (PDT) and should have completed their tasks by about 11:30 a.m. It is the first time in several years that the Bearcats will be working at multiple sites. Last year, WU built a trail in Wallace Marine Park using bark chips and bark dust.

Willamette, ranked #18 in the D3football.com Top 25 Preseason Poll, will open the 2010 season by taking on the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, ranked #16, on Saturday, Sept. 4 in Stevens Point, Wisc. at 12 p.m. (PDT). Willamette will play at Hardin-Simmons University, ranked #15, in Abilene, Texas, on Sept. 11 at 4 p.m. (PDT).

The home opener for the Bearcats is slated for Sept. 18 against Southern Oregon University. Game time at McCulloch Stadium is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. (PDT).
