Bearcats are Set to Host USTA/ITA Regional in Men's Tennis
WU has Four Top-10 Seeds in Singles, Two Top-4 Seeds in Doubles
SALEM, ORE. -- Some of the top NCAA Division III men's tennis players from the Northwest Conference will be competing at Willamette University this weekend during the USTA/ITA Small College Northwest Regional, set for Saturday, Sept. 25 through Monday, Sept. 27.
Matches will be played at the WU Tennis Courts and the Salem Swim and Tennis Club. If it's raining, some or all of the matches will be moved to the Courthouse Tennis Club.
Willamette is entering a solid group of athletes in the Regional. The Bearcats have four of the Top 10 seeds in the singles bracket and two of the Top 4 seeds in the doubles bracket.
Players seeded in singles for Willamette are Joshua Wong (So., Hilo, HI/Hilo HS), Michael Baumgartner (So., Albany, OR/West Albany HS), Cody Ferguson (Jr., North Bend, OR/North Bend HS/Western Oregon Univ.) and Matt Houser (Sr., Vancouver, WA/Evergreen HS).
Wong is seeded #2 and Baumgartner is listed at #4. Ferguson holds the #8 seed, while Houser is seeded #10.
The same four Bearcats also are seeded in doubles. Ferguson and Wong are listed at #3 in doubles. Baumgartner and Houser are seeded #4.
This past spring, Wong went 16-6 overall in singles. He reached the Round of 16 at the Ojai Tournament. Houser finished the season with a 13-6 record, while Ferguson achieved a record of 12-6.
Willamette went 13-8 in dual meets, including 11-5 (3rd place tie) in the Northwest Conference. Willamette was seeded #3 for the NWC Tournament and reached the finals before losing to Whitman College. The Bearcats ended the season ranked #10 in the West Region.
At the 2009 Northwest Regional last fall, Wong and Houser both advanced to the quarterfinals in singles. Houser combined with Baumgartner to reach the quarterfinals in doubles.
Action at this year's Northwest Regional will get underway on Saturday at 8 a.m. (PDT). The first two rounds of singles and the first two rounds of doubles are scheduled to be completed on Saturday, along with the first round of consolation singles.
The brackets feature 64 athletes in singles and 30 entries in doubles. Mark Magdaong of Linfield College is seeded #1 in singles. Magdaong and Brent Kingzett are seeded #1 in doubles.
On Sunday, matches are slated to start at 9 a.m. The Round of 16 and the quarterfinals in singles will be held on Sunday, along with the quarterfinals and the semifinals in doubles.
The schedule for Monday will begin at 8 a.m. and will feature the semifinals and finals in singles, as well as the finals in doubles.
Winners of the tournament in singles and doubles will advance to the USTA/ITA National Small College Championships, scheduled for Oct. 14-17. The event will be held at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center in Mobile, Ala.
