Castillo Places Second in Men's Race at Pier Park Invitational
Mattox Finishes Third in Women's Race
PORTLAND, ORE. -- Leo Castillo (Jr., Parkdale, OR/Hood River Valley HS) of Willamette University took second place in the men's race at the Pier Park Invitational, hosted by the University of Portland on Friday, Sept. 10. Castillo led the Bearcats to second place in the team standings behind Portland.
In the women's race, Willamette's Kimber Mattox (Jr., Bend, OR/Bend HS/Cornell Univ.) finished third. Portland won the women's title, with the Bearcats in second place.
Joash Osoro claimed the men's individual title for Portland with a time of 24:42.95 over the 8-kilometer course. Castillo followed at 25:06.67. Craig Hopkins of Portland placed third in 25:13.24, just in front of Stefan Redfield (Sr., Sisters, OR/Sisters HS) of Willamette at 25:14.59.
Osoro led Portland to a 1-3-5-8-9 finish for scoring purposes. The Pilots registered a team score of 26, to edge out Willamette at 33. WU's top five runners to cross the finish line scored 2-4-6-10-11.
Warner Pacific College placed third with a score of 102. Seattle University was fourth at 105, Northwest Christian University was fifth at 139, with Clark College in sixth at 157, Highline Community College in seventh at 207, Clackamas Community College in eighth at 209 and Mount Hood Community College in ninth at 250.
Castillo and Redfield led seven WU athletes in the top 15. Other top 15 finishers for the Bearcats were Kevin Aubol (So., Ellensburg, WA/Ellensburg HS) in sixth, Parker Bennett (Fr., Medford, OR/Sisters, HS) in 11th, Matt Parker (Sr., Portland, OR/Lincoln HS) in 12th, Nicholas Rebol (Sr., Cottonwood, CA/Red Bluff Union HS) in 14th and Ryan McLaughlin (Milwaukie, OR/Milwaukie HS) in 15th.
Aubol's sixth place time was 25.24.52. Bennett clocked in at 25:46.40 and Parker was timed at 26:00.48 to round out WU's scoring runners. Due to one unattached runner, Bennett was 10th and Parker placed 11th among scorers.
Kellie Houser of Portland achieved first place in the women's race with a time of 17:51.37 over the 5-kilometer course. Second place was earned by Melissa Hastings, also from Portland, as she reached the finish line in 18:04.32. Mattox was third with a time of 18:13.14, just over 10 seconds in front of Natasha Verma of Portland, who took fourth place at 18:23.24.
Joining Mattox among the top 15 overall finishers was WU teammate Kaitlin Greene (Jr., Pullman, WA/Pullman HS), who took 15th at 19:11.98. Willamette placed five runners in the top 25.
The Pilots recorded a team score of 20 after finishing 1-2-4-6-7 among scorers. Willamette earned second place with a score of 64, while Northwest Christian was third at 77. Clark placed fourth at 111, Seattle University took fifth at 117, Mount Hood CC was sixth at 186, Clackamas CC was seventh at 190 and Highline CC placed eighth at 211.
The next meet for the Bearcats will be the Willamette Grass Course on Friday, Sept. 17 at Bush's Pasture Park in Salem, Ore. Action is set to get underway at 2 p.m. (PDT).
