Bearcats Compete at Beaver Classic in Corvallis

CORVALLIS, ORE. -- A group of Willamette University cross country runners participated in the Beaver Classic in Corvallis, Ore., on Saturday, Oct. 23. The meet was held at Avery Park, with the women competing in a 6-kilometer race and the men competing in an 8-kilometer race.

The top runner for the Willamette women's team was Megan Horning (Sr, Page, AZ/Page HS), who finished 74th. Horning's time was 25:06. Erin Madden (Jr., Albuquerque, NM/Eldorado HS) placed 76th with a time of 25:22.

Kendra Schaffer (So., Veneta, OR/Elmira HS) finished the race in 25:32 and placed 81st, while Karlie Pyl (Fr., Bonney Lake, WA/Bonney Lake HS) was timed at 25:35 and placed 85th. Willamette did not record a team score in the women's race.

Southern Oregon University won the women's team title with a score of 41. The University of Portland placed second at 61 and the University of Oregon Running Club was third at 87.

In the men's race, Sean Sharma (So., La Canada, CA/La Canada HS) was WU's top finisher. He recorded a time of 26:28 and took 41st place. Josh Echols (Fr., Olympia, WA/Capital HS) of Willamette was 65th. He completed the course in 27:37. Octaviano Chavarin (So., Merrill, OR/Lost River HS) placed 78th at 28:27 and Jonathan Lanning (Jr., Springfield, OR/Thurston HS) was 81st at 28:38.

The men's team title was won by Southern Oregon University with a score of 21. Seattle University took second place with a score of 44 and the University of Oregon Running Club was third at 98. Willamette finished ninth.

WU will compete at the Northwest Conference Championships on Saturday, Oct. 30. The meet will be held at Fort Steilacoom Park in Tacoma, Wash., and will be hosted by the University of Puget Sound. Action is set to get underway at 10 a.m. (PDT).
