Willamette to Celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day
Activities Planned for Basketball Doubleheader on Feb. 5
SALEM, ORE. – Willamette University will celebrate the National Girls and Women in Sport Day when the Bearcats host a Northwest Conference doubleheader against Pacific University on Saturday, Feb. 5. The women’s game between Willamette and Pacific will begin at Cone Field House at 6 p.m. (PST), with the men’s game to follow at about 8 p.m.
It is the 25th year for the National Girls and Women in Sports Day. This year’s theme is “Play, Believe, Achieve.” Although the official day for the NGWSD was Feb. 2, many high schools, colleges and universities throughout the country are hosting special events to coincide with home games throughout the first week of February.
Much of Willamette’s focus will be on Girl Scout troops from throughout Salem and the Willamette Valley. The Girl Scouts have been invited to an open gym and other activities between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. on Saturday. The Girl Scouts also will learn a dance routine to perform at halftime courtesy of the Dallas K-8 Dancers.
Later in the day, the Girl Scouts will return to Cone Field House for Willamette’s pre-game warm-ups.
Prior to the women’s game, Willamette will honor former WU Head Women’s Basketball Coach Cheryl Brown. Brown, whose 1985-86 team was inducted into the WU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2009, coached the Bearcats for a total of 11 seasons from 1982-83 through 1988-89 and from 1990-91 through 1993-94.
Brown’s overall record at Willamette was 147-128 (.535), including 20-win seasons in 1984-85 (22-8) and 1985-86 (20-7). Brown will be an Honorary Bearcat during the women’s game.
The pre-game festivities also will include WU Spirit face painting in the lobby of Cone Field House. The face painting will be available for all Willamette basketball fans from 5:15 p.m. until approximately 6:15 p.m.
In addition, Iggy’s Catering, which runs the concessions stand during Willamette home basketball games, will be offering two specials. One special is a hot dog, chips and a soda for $3.00. The other special is nachos and a soda for $3.00. People wearing pink clothing will be eligible to be selected for a basketball shooting contest at halftime of the women’s game with the chance to win $5 concession coupons from Iggy’s.
