Willamette Wins Team Point Trophy at Governor's Cup Regatta

Bearcats Take First Place in WV4+, W2V8+ and MV8+

SALEM, ORE. -- Willamette University won the team point trophy at the Governor's Cup Regatta on Saturday, March 12, as the Bearcats hosted the University of Puget Sound in six events on the Willamette River. The Bearcats won the women's varsity 4+, the women's second varsity 8+ and the men's varsity 8+ to claim the point trophy by one point over the Loggers.

WU accumulated 8 points in the team standings, while Puget Sound finished with 7 points. Each of the varsity eights was worth 4 points, the varsity fours and the women's second varsity eight were worth 2 points and the women's open was worth 1 point.

Puget Sound placed first in the women's varsity 8+, the men's varsity 4+ and the women's open 8+.

The women's varsity 8+ and the men's varsity 8+ were decided by two races each, with the times averaged to determined the winners. The two-race format was used to balance the strengths and weaknesses encountered in each rowing lane.

Rowing in Willamette's winning MV8+ were stroke Maxx Kaplan (So., Oregon City, OR/Oregon City HS), 7-seat Till Gwinn (So., Oregon City, OR/Oregon City HS), 6-seat David Solomon (Sr., Orinda, CA/Miramonte HS), 5-seat Jackson Lowe (Fr., Berkeley, CA/Berkeley HS), 4-seat Wesley Dawn (Fr., Mountlake Terrace, WA/Mountlake Terrace HS), 3-seat Alex Mott (Sr., Oakland, CA/Sojourner Truth School), 2-seat Maxwell Mensinger (So., Pleasanton, CA/Foothill HS) and bow Joel Ribbens (Sr., Kenai, AK/Nikiski HS).

The Willamette MV8+ was guided by coxswain Jenna Shellan (Fr., Mount Vernon, WA/Mount Vernon HS).

Participating on WU's winning crew in the W2V8+ were coxswain Kara Hafkey (Sr., Tempe, AZ/Glencoe HS), stroke Heidi Hunt (Jr., Bellingham, WA/Sehome HS), 7-seat Gwen Hryciw (So., Portland, OR/Sunset HS), 6-seat Christina Thorburn (Sr., Boulder, CO/Niwot HS), 5-seat Katy Kaszubinski (So., Los Altos, CA/Los Altos HS), 4-seat Lars Stiglich (Jr., Vancouver, WA/U. of Washington), 3-seat Sophie Hearn (Fr., Berkeley, CA/Albany HS), 2-seat Annie Bender (Fr., Fairbanks, AK/West Valley HS) and bow Leslie Schultz (Sr., South Pasadena, CA/South Pasadena HS).

Competing for the Bearcats on the victorious women's varsity 4+ were coxswain Blair Davis (So., Portland, OR/Sunset HS), stroke Marguex Hunter (So., Ridgefield, WA/Jesuit HS), 3-seat Jessica Lovell (So. Edina, MN/Southern Methodist Univ.), 2-seat Marjolein aan den Boom (So., Nijmegen, NETH/Exchange Student) and Hryciw at bow.

At the end of the days events, the Bearcats held a boat dedication ceremony to name a new four-person boat after Willamette President M. Lee Pelton. As part of the ceremony, Dr. Pelton poured water from the finish line over the bow of of the boat.

Willamette will compete again on Saturday, March 26 at the Daffodil Spring Regatta on American Lake near Tacoma, Wash.
