Willamette Wins Men's Second Varsity 4+ at Covered Bridge Regatta

All Bearcats Earn a Medal, as WU Finishes in Top 3 in Five Events

EUGENE, ORE. -- Every member of the Willamette men's and women's rowing teams competing at the Covered Bridge Regatta on Saturday, April 9 at Dexter Lake earned at least one medal, as the Bearcats placed in the top three in five events. Heading the list of accomplishments was a first place finish for the Willamette men's second varsity 4+.

The Bearcats placed second in the men's varsity 4+ and the women's second varsity 8+. In addition, WU achieved third place finishes in the women's varsity 8+ and the men's varsity 8+. With three top three finishes, including the winning M2V4+, the Bearcat men's rowing team had its most successful regatta in recent seasons.

Willamette won the M2V4+ by nearly 12 seconds over Seattle Pacific University in second place. The Bearcats reached the finish line in 7:32.84 for the 2,000-meter course, while Seattle Pacific was timed at 7:44.57. The University of Oregon Club placed third at 7:55.99. The University of Portland, Portland State and Lewis & Clark College rounded out the men's varsity fours.

Rowing with coxswain Lucas Miller (So., McKinleyville, CA/Arcata HS) on Willamette's winning shell were stroke Jackson Lowe (Fr., Berkeley, CA/Berkeley HS), 3-seat Wesley Dawn (Fr., Mountlake Terrace, WA/Mountlake Terrace HS), 2-seat Joel Ribbens (Sr., Kenai, AK/Nikiski HS) and bow David Solomon (Sr., Orinda, CA/Miramonte HS).

In the men's varsity 4+, Willamette finished behind only Seattle Pacific. The Falcons finished in 7:19.60, with Willamette second at 7:25.96. Seattle University placed third at 7:32.33, while Humboldt State University was fourth at 7:44.27. Overall, six crews competed in the MV4+.

The WU men's varsity four included coxswain Jenna Shellan (Fr., Mount Vernon, WA/Mount Vernon HS), along with stroke Maxx Kaplan (Sr., Oregon City, OR/Oregon City HS), 3-seat Till Gwinn (So., Oregon City, OR/Oregon City HS), 2-seat Maxwell Mensinger (So., Pleasanton, CA/Foothill HS) and bow Nate Keffer (Sr., Santa Fe, NM/Monte Del Sol Charter School).

Willamette and Humboldt State battled through a competitive race in the women's second varsity 8+. WU held the lead for awhile, and then Humboldt State moved up and the two boats fought to take an advantage. HSU managed a solid stroke rate toward the end of the race to reach the finish line in 7:51.23 and gain a margin of victory of 3.26 seconds. WU took second in 7:54.49. Lewis & Clark was third in 8:09.98.

Rowing for the Bearcats in the W2V8+ were stroke Heidi Hunt (Jr., Bellingham, WA/Sehome HS), 7-seat Leslie Schultz (Sr., South Pasadena, CA/South Pasadena HS), 6-seat Marguex Hunter (So., Ridgefield, WA/Jesuit HS), 5-seat Sophie Hearn (Fr., Berkeley, CA/Albany HS), 4-seat Becca Hall (Jr., Mercer Island, WA/Mercer Island HS), 3-seat Meredith Miller (Fr., Lake Oswego, OR/Seattle Pacific Univ.), 2-seat Annie Bender (Fr., Fairbanks, AK/West Valley HS) and bow Katy Kaszubinski (Los Altos, CA/Los Altos HS). The coxswain for Willamette was Blair Davis (So., Portland, OR/Sunset HS).

WU, which competes in NCAA Division III in women's rowing, placed third in the women's varsity 8+ behind NCAA Division II powers Seattle Pacific and Humboldt State. SPU won the race in 7:24.50, while HSU took second in 7:28.56. The Bearcats trailed Humboldt State by just 3.24 seconds and completed the course in 7:31.80. Lewis & Clark and the University of Oregon Club also rowed in the WV8+.

The Bearcats also claimed a third place finish in the men's varsity 8+ as one of three crews to break seven minutes. Lewis & Clark won the race in 6:46.70. Oregon State University was second in 6:50.30. Willamette followed with a time of 6:58.57. A total of seven crews rowed in the race.
